Trump isn’t increasing tariffs on China and has backed down so, that isn’t a worry.

Though people need to realize this has a negative impact on the economy regardless because tariffs are a tax imposed on imports or exports, specifically an importer / exporter.

Trump’s tariffs are designed to be on imports alone, those in charge of imports is a company. That company will have to pay higher costs to import specific products from a corporations, small businesses, etc. so, to make up for the economic loss, they will charge that corporation, small business, etc. an additional fee/tax. Once that happens, that entity puts a tax/fee/inflates the price onto the consumer.

This is going to reduce consumer confidence, make things more expensive, and halt the economy. Studies have shown when there is more money going around, people spend it and if consumers suddenly have less money to splurge, they’ll spend less and save.

This is going to hurt the economy and I can’t say how much damage because this is unprecedented. Inflation keeps climbing and grocery prices are through the roof as a result to begin with, imagine when it continues to go up. To top it all off, less foreigners are buy American made goods which also stops economic growth which is really bad.

Well given that Trump has already caved in and completely changed tune on China, the next course of events is likely him trying to sway perception into him having achieved something - although China has not even agreed to talk to him yet. Followed by backing down entirely.

Alienating your best allies because you want uncontrolled prices on vital goods like medicine. Alienating your best suppliers because they supply more than they buy from you.

No wonder the world sees a child throwing a tantrum.

Assuming he does back down, it should not be much worse than now. Although for the U. S you have already gone from best economy in a decade at 2025 start to the worst in 100 years. It is, shocking to say the least. Even incompetence should not be able to do this much harm.

First of all, the Chinese will begin to lower prices to keep their markets open. Without the United States market, the Chinese economy would collapse into dark ages. As their demographic suicide further emerges, it will anyway. The future of China is grim.
Second, America will rapidly developed new suppliers in Southeast Asia. including Vietnam Philippines South Korea. and Indonesia.
Third, We are already developing new domestic supplies Of precious metals and critical minerals in America.
Fourth, China will continue to try to lure us into a hot war. They want that so that their population will be inspired into a war economy. This will fail. Because we can see it coming and will not play into it.
Fifth, We are already training and outfitting Southeast Asian countries militarily, to engage China. in the South China Sea.

USA is a very important trading partner for China and represent roughly 12% of their exports. Losing this would indeed hurt, but it would hurt less than US already hurt itself with the tariffs.

China in turn represents slightly more than 50% of US imports. Losing this would... completely decapitate US industry.

Yes, it is absolutely possible to mitigate most of the damage, for both, by finding new markets. But at a more than 4x higher codepenfency, make no mistake USA is the one needing this, not China. Hence why Trump is already softening and Xi Jinping hasn't even bothered looking at him yet.

Sure. For now. I would not be at all surprised if one outcome here, that is arguably even reasonable, is to try and control imports so that more than half of the goods in your country does not rely on a single supplier.

The only tariffs Trump has done that I agree with are the Chinese ones. He's going too far too fast, and this is going to hurt a lot but China is a hostile dictatorship that wants to kill and annex our allies. It was stupid to link our economies in the first place.
