If you like to read books, what kind of books do you like to read?

I like anything that’s comprehensive about a topic. I’m not really a “sit-down-and-read-a-book” type, but I love learning new skills, and just having anything that’s kind of “The Bible of” X-topic.

I have them for fishing, fitness, every sport I follow or hope to maybe one day follow (or just understand to an expert level), cooking, grilling/smoking, housekeeping, home decorating, home improvement, car maintenance, landscaping, tools, woodworking, bushcraft (like building shelters and wilderness survival), emergency survival, etc, etc

To be honest, and with no offense to anyone who enjoys this type of thing, I just can’t get into reading fiction, of any sort. Like I’m not really looking to be told a story.

I bring it up because I’m still kinda salty that people treated me like an idiot for years because I don’t enjoy reading. I just don’t have the imagination for it, so I’m just reading hundreds of pages of text, it’s very unexciting. Just the way my brain works. Ironically, I can GENERATE hundreds of pages of text with relative ease😂 Must just like hearing myself talk, lmao.

But a couple years ago I got an audio book app, and I spent a summer listening to classic books instead of music when I was on long drives. I listened to all those books I was supposed to read in high school and college but bought the Cliff’s Notes for instead😂

And you know what? OVERRATED. Not even just the stories themselves, but like the art form. Again, totally cool if you enjoy it. I’m just saying I’ve been getting big-timed by the “tweed jacket with suede elbow patches”, wannabe college professor crowd all this time, all these years….. for what essentially equates to watching a movie.

I get it, I get it, the book is better than the movie, usually, but I just mean “I was told a fictional story about fictional people. There were characters, there were some problems encountered, said problems usually would be resolved somehow, and then it was over. I just watched a better version of a movie that took me a month to get through in my spare time. WHY am I a more worldly, enriched, intellectual person because I did this?”

If that’s for you, awesome, knock yourselves out. I’m just saying don’t act like it makes you some hybrid of Einstein and Socrates, while the rest of us are huffing glue😝

Fiction, or history based non fiction. I still have to read Miguel de Cervantes's work 'Don Quixote', which is sitting on my bookshelf. I want to read more of Shakespeare.

I tend to read techno-thrillers, science fiction, alternate histories, plus actual history and historical biographies.

Tom Clancy would be an example of a techno-thriller author - he wrote novels about military conflicts with lots of technical details of the gear and equipment and how that works in the real world. A number of his books have been made into movies of various quality - The Hunt For Red October and the two Harrison Ford movies are the best of them.

One of my favorite authors is Neal Stephenson, whose books range from slightly cyberpunk to alternative histories and futures. His prose is extremely colorful and paints vivid mental pictures in your mind. He also worked for Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin as a rocket scientist and futurist, so he's legit.

I've read lots of books about both American and European history, going back to Sumer and ancient Egypt, including the Greek and Roman Empires. But I have probably read the most about WWII and to a lesser degree Vietnam.

This is going to sound weird but, I like to read old school text books. Like the early 1900's. I catch shit that just wouldn't exist in a modern one. Like I remember this math book taught me how to look at a flag flying in the air, determine (and how from a flying flag) wind speed, and then calculate how to make a sniper shot from such and such distance... basic algebra.

Other shit stand out too that you modern people would look at and be like "WTF?" It's amazing to me because us in our time and place, had certain realities set in front of us or painted for us... and we were expected to conform.

As a side note, I really enjoy classical or antiquity logical reasoning as well. I can get this from the usual Aristotle or Plato stuff, but also from their Historians. How they did things and the why is what gives my steak rigormortis.

Right now I am reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I like reading Star Trek and Star Wars books, along with some fantasy, and I used to read Buffy the Vampire Slayer years ago.

I tend to like reading short stories so I can read something in one or two sittings. That way if I only am in the mood to read for a couple days, it works for me. I like things like Tales From the Captain's Table, Tales From the Dominion War, and others like that. Anyone know of good fantasy books that are multiple short stories? Something like 15 to 40 pages per story?

Everything, but topic at the time depends on mood. Love learning new things. I'm am the type of person who even reads vehicle owner manuals and then see other people with the same vehicle and ask if they know things. I've had so many people go home and read their own. lol Lots of tricks and cool hidden things in there.

Mostly nonfiction. “Being Wrong” by Kathryn Schultz is among my favorites. I also enjoy “Iron John” by Robert Bly.
When i read fiction, it’s usually something that inspired a movie or series, or was inspired by a movie or series. For example i’m reading “It” by Stephen King very slowly. Ell oh ell! That’s a very big book for me! I’ve read “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk multiple times.

As it is now, I'm reading a lot of true crime, sci fi and indulging in academic literature as pedagogy, psychology and social studies, this includes research and publications.

I'm also into: historical (fiction and non fiction), romance, YA, fantasy, thrillers, crime (especially Nordic), mythology + the sagas, fairytales and lore.
