I first saw Black Sabbath in 1971 when they opened for Grand Funk Railroad in Long Beach, CA.
My friends and I didn't even know what opening band was scheduled.
By the time we got inside the venue, the opening band had already started. We heard a raw, thunderous sound unlike anything in previous musical history.
Once we got inside the actual arena and to our seats, we were supercharged and stood on our chairs throughout Black Sabbath's set.
Afterwards, we bought the album Black Sabbath 1, as well as the second album, Paranoid, that had just been released.
From then on, we were fans.
I was the guitarist and vocalist in a garage band and loved playing Black Sabbath songs.
Sabbath was a headliner after that 1971 tour. We went to every one of their tours during the '70s. I even saw them at Cal Jam 1.
It is poignant that, despite his failing health, Ozzy performed his last concert only two weeks ago. Nobody loved his fans more than Ozzy.
That weird kid from Birmingham sure created an image and made his mark.
