Nah. Metal peaked with Metallica. Sure, they've had some rough spots and Kirk Hammett basically just copies and pastes solos from the Load and ReLoad era onto what are fairly solid attempts at Master of Puppets and... And Justice For All sequels, but they still write killer riffs in mostly standard tuning; the main riff to Spit Out The Bone is much tastier than anything most metal bands after 2000 have written on 7, 8, or even 9-string guitars (apparently that's a thing now for some reason). Most metal bands today are much too down-tuned and saturated.
Alter Bridge is pretty dang good too, though their sound is much more diverse.
