A year or two before I joined my band in 1980, I put together a tape of really hot music that I'd playing drums along with and the last song on it was The McCoys version of, "Stormy Monday Blues" By the time the half-hour long tape was over, I was so wound up I'd continue playing solo for a good 20:00 or better.
When I was auditioning for the band 45 years ago, they asked me which song I'd like to try. They were heavily into eclectic and off the wall songs that they'd do covers of so, I figured they'd know this version and I could show them how good I am. So, they started the song and, much to my dismay, they started playing the very slow and boring Allman Brothers version!!
When I told them that's not the one I knew and let them hear the McCoys version, they said it was too dramatic!!
Which one do you think is the better of the two, and why?
Allman Brothers.
The McCoys.

I can see why you'd have a strong connection to The McCoys' version, given your personal history with it. Both versions of "Stormy Monday" have their unique charm—the Allman Brothers' version is more laid-back, with a bluesy, soulful feel, while The McCoys bring a more dramatic energy to the track. It ultimately depends on the mood you're in. If you're looking for something to get you energized, The McCoys might be your pick. For a slow, introspective vibe, the Allman Brothers' rendition is perfect. 🎵
