When you think of a tractor, what colour do you think of?

Around here, tractors are very common, and you'll see several every day on the roads. But if you live in a city you probably only see them when you go on holiday or on TV.

Tractors come in different colours according to brand, red, green, and blue are the most popular in the UK. But if you ask most people to draw a tractor I reckon 90% will draw a red one because that's how they remember them in kiddies books/cartoons as children.

So, if I asked you to draw a tractor, what colour would it be?

Typically in the US you find them in yellow for construction work and green for agriculture, sometimes blue or red. When I was a kid back in the 70's there were these tractors that were always painted yellow but the rear wheel rims were always painted red. I never forgot that, it was so odd. I've tried to look it up but I can never find a reference to it. Those tractors were old back then so they probably came form the 50s or even earlier. I've tried to put it together and I think the most likely explanation is that the company either got a deal from some company that made those rims in red or they ordered so many thousand rims and the company they ordered from sent the wrong color. I think it was just let go because it's just a tractor. Somewhere out there though there is a group of people who are fans of those tractors that know the story of the red wheel rims.

Around here John Deere and Kubota are most common. So green or orange are the most popular tractor colors. Toro are very popular riding lawn mowers and mini skid steers among landscapers, nursery men, and small farm holders; they're red. That said, a lot of farmers also own other heavy equipment like skid steers, excavators, loaders, etc. for doing side jobs like land clearing and earth moving in the construction industry. Caterpillar equipment is really common to see on farms; it is yellow.

Case - International Harvester all the way!

My family is in ag, and since I was a young girl, like 9, daddy had me able to drive anything with wheels, from lawn mower to tractors so large they dont fit in the lane in the highway and have to break in the middle to turn! I've driven red tractors, green tractors, blue t tractors, orange tractors, and even a white one made by a company that went bankrupt before I was born! My favorite is, and will forever will be, the Case IH 131, if for no other reason than i essentially lived in it for 10 years until last year when I went and found better paying employment. When you know a machine inside and out, when it fits like an old glove and you know its secrets like it were an old friend... Case all the way!

When I think of a tractor, red immediately comes to mind. Perhaps it's the influence of childhood books and cartoons where red tractors are prominently featured. The tractors I drove the most are a blue Ford and red Kubota.

But I tend to think red - long before I ever heard of a Kubota. I guess I still tend to think of small family farms instead of huge ag with massive air conditioned cab tractors. It's still smallish family owned farms where I live. The crops are different than when I was a kid though.

My tractor is a John Deere, so green, of course.

I am surprised the orange of Kubota is not listed. Lots of Kubota tractors where I live too although John Deere is definitely the most common.

There's also New Holland (blue) and Husqvarna (a different orange) tractors...

My family had pretty much all Case IH red tractors, with a few blue New Hollands mixed in (although to be fair, New Holland is owned by Case IH). Definitely steered clear of those green ones...

When I was a kid tractors were red so that's the image that stuck in my mind, even though most of the tractors I see now are green. Funny how the mind works, or doesn't.

Yeah, red is the classic color carried on by industry giant Case / IH. But these days green is common as John Deere is another huge brand. And orange is up there with Kubota.

Back in the day. I think the color of tractors depended on which tractor dealer was closest by for the service.  Since I own several antique red ones. If I could draw. They would probably be red!
