Why is everyone obsessed with tragic stories?

Why don't people like happy stories or happy ever afters? Why does there always need to be someone dying or suffering in a story to make it good?

Usually people that have been through tragedy themselves, enjoy stories like that, because they are easier to relate to.

Besides, tragedies often allow for deeper analysis. I don't really watch movies for fun. Without sounding too pretentious, I watch movies to uncover deeper themes, be moved, and learn about the human condition. Comedies and happy endings are fine, but well written tragedies are something else.

There's a lot of people suffering so those stories can be easier to relate to. I prefer happy stories.

Never used to when I was younger, and I still don't really seek them out to this day, but yeah... I do. Some can be pretty bad, predictable, corny, and have bad acting though. I think my favourite rom com is probably Crazy Stupid Love

Are they? As far as I know there are tons of "happily ever after" stories. Folks like extremes when it comes to movies bc they're cathartic.

There are definitely some movies with happy ever after, but I think movies with some level of tragedy are far more common. Don't quote me though. I might be wrong on that. But from my observations, most people I've met prefer some level of tragedy.

Honestly, I used to gravitate towards tragic stories, but since my love life has become a bit of a tragedy, I don't like them as much and I don't get why I ever saw the appeal. Give me a happy story anyday now.

I don't know, I'm more into speculative fiction. Good solid science fiction that is about discovering new things. Fantasy is OK but it's way less interesting, stories with a dark trajectory are boring as nothing gets done. Maybe if it's a monster movie and you're kind of rooting for the monster. That is if the monster doesn't die too which is sometimes the case. I'll watch a movie where everyone dies over a chick flick though, that's like torture.
