It's Tricky Tuesday, what's the best trick you ever played on someone?

We had a student intern working in our software group. Everyone, including her, had unique logons to the computer system. One day, we changed her password so she couldn't logon. When she figured out we had tricked her, she asked what her password was. We told her it was somethingcute. It took her 2 days before she figured out how to logon, even though we told her what the password was.

It's Tricky Tuesday. What's the best trick you ever played on someone? Please tell us the details.

The day before my wedding, I had to go to the duplex where my then-fiancee/now-wife was living to find our marriage license (I wasn't living there yet). She was panicking a little bit. I toom my best man with me to help me look for it; it was in one of those large business envelopes. We found it...but... on the drive back to my parents' house, I said...

"Hey... what if we pretended like this envelope is empty?" He got a slightly concerned look on his face. Probably in part because he saw how nervous she was, but also probably in part out of bitterness that he didn't think of it first, because he's normally the prankster.

So we got back to my parents' house and took the license out of the envelope. He hid it behind his back. My soon-to-be wife came out on the front porch...

"That's it! Oh, good, thank you for finding it!"

... and then her panic shot through the stratosphere when she saw it was empty. The look on her face was priceless. We only let it sit for about five seconds before we showed her the license though. It was fun while it lasted.

It’s pretty common in the trades to goof on first year apprentices. We’re always sending kids to look for “guzindas” and conduit stretchers. On one job i was at for years, the general foreman and safety leader both had dunce caps made up for apprentices that don’t figure it out before they ask someone. “Yeah, i keep that in my desk… here.” then hand them a dunce cap. Expectations drop dramatically if they still don’t get it.
It’s kind of rude. When lacking experience compels young people to strive harder to please, this sort of hazing kind of punishes arguably their most valuable quality. Ultimately it’s all in fun, and it does help some of the sharper students to learn to exercise their critical thinking skills early and often.

I'm so disappointed in you. The correct computer joke is to fix it so when you type a letter it gives you the wrong one, or better still mess with auto correct so certain words automatically change to something weird.

The one I enjoy every year is telling tourists there's a flock of penquins living here that escaped from a zoo years ago. They move about a bit but if you search you'll find them.

@purplepoppy I didn't do it, but one of the guys in the office did something similar for another student intern we had. He actually switched some of the key caps on the student guy's keyboard.

Create a background with a fake windows message in the centre. People will spend ages trying to close it

We called 2 people who know each other on a conference line and then muted. They both would answer thinking the other one had called. Hilarity ensues.

With one pair, they spent a moment trying to figure out how this had happened, then continued on making lunch plans for the next day.

At the college where I work there was a professor whose office was across the hall,. He called the help desk complaining about the keyboard on his computer. I went over with one of the techs to check it out. We told him we would get him a new one. The tech I was with wanted to play a prank on him. We got a keyboard and shifted all the keys over one position. We were all waiting got him to come back to his office. He really was a good sport about it. He wanted to keep the keyboard to do it to somebody else.

Oh, you guys are so creative with the computer jokes. Me and my sisters have done some fake emails but nothing complicated and liked to prank each other to some degree growing up but it was old fashioned pranks like a rubber spider in your sleeping bag or things like that. And of course, the famous hand-in-warm-water trick but I was usually on the receiving end of that one. 😳
