Which of these garden styles do you prefer?

I am not referring specifically to the gardens shown in these photos, but rather to the style.

The first four photos show one type of garden, while the other photos show a second type of garden.

The first set of gardens are the rigid the gardens of the aristocrats in 1600s or so and onwards. Croquet anyone? It takes of lot of time to keep it just so but it does lack color and finesse. Pawns all over the world are a byproduct of this type of garden and ordinary people tried to have a piece of it themselves

The other type can get a little overgrown and no one really notices. It has many more colors, scents and is more likely to be painted by an artist. Lots of buzzing bees in this garden. To me this would be the better garden as a garden is supposed to be like walking through a daydream in my mind.

i definitely am more into the second type. the first type are beautiful and have their place but if it were my home i'd definitely want more cozy, colorful, and natural feeling.

No problem, the first four gardens are French gardens.

The other four photos are English gardens.

My theory was instinctively that the majority of Anglo-Saxons (not only English ) prefer the English style of garden.

i think we are more familiar with that concept of a garden. i think even when you say the word garden most americans wouldn't immediately think of that french style

haha. i suddenly interested in the history of variations in gardens. the french style is also common in czech republic, austria, slovakia and countries in that area. some of the larger estates in england have gardens more similar French gardens but not as common for sure in england

That more natural, slightly “wild” look feels so cinematic and artistic to me, like something out of a Ghibli film or a European indie movie. Curved paths, mixed textures, and plants that look like they just grew there by magic give a garden so much character and soul. 🌸✨

I like the 5th one with the bridge or the 6th one.
The first four seem like a waste of space.
I like botanical gardens with waterfalls, ponds, streams, bridges, winding paths, sculptures, benches, lawns for picnics, various garden zones, a variety of beautiful trees, bushes and flowers. Semi natural looking, not too formal.

You can create shapes in your garden. My father is a gardener, and at home I have always known our hedges, our flower beds, etc., shaped and geometric, etc.

And our garden is relatively small.

We can. But we are cold 6 months of the year. We mostly have trees in our land.
We don’t get as much sun. France has amazing soils and sunlight.

Interesting maybe it has a lot to do with underlying cultural differences.

The French style came from a long linage of similar geometric garden styles from Persia to Islamic world to Renaissance Italy.

The English style was a sort of 18th century rebellion against the French style influenced by contemporary landscape painting.
