What are your favorite strategic board games like chess?

I love chess.  I love the games that need the strategy.

I'm not really one for strategic board games to be honest. They're to linear for me I prefer strategy games like men of war a squad based strategy game or a modded version of EAW FOC

You have a lot more things you have to constantly keep an eye on and you can't just sit there and make the enemy wait for your turn to end everything is constantly moving, changing evolving and you either adapt or you lose. All the while the enemy is constantly putting pressure on you.

It's easy to sit there with all the time in world making your opponent wait on you while you formulate your strategy.

But it's a lot harder to do when you and your opponent are moving several pieces at once and your having to counter and deal with the opponents move and formulate strategy's and tactics all the while the opponent is constantly pressuring you and giving you no time to breath.

Speed chess is comparable but it's still not the same. Because in chess you only have to worry about individual units and the restricted ways they can move. In a real time strategy game you have to worry about logistics, resources, moral, unit strength, weaponry, equipment and units aren't restricted in how they can move which makes them wildly unpredictable it's a whole other ball game.

Backgammon...

The reason is Backgammon is more like the real world.

In Chess, it's sort of like a pure mathematics problem. Everything is perfect as both players know everything about the situation at any point in the game simply by looking at the board. The only thing a player isn't certain of is what the opponent is thinking.

In Backgammon, it's similar except for one enormous twist: Dice create an element of chance...

For instance, Chess is like playing a sport in which everyone plays inside a domed stadium. Backgammon is like playing the same sport but in a stadium exposed to the weather. So, as perfect as a move in Backgammon might be, a roll of the dice can make that perfect move into a perfect disaster.

This is much more like the real world because your decisions in life in the real world involve probabilities of things occurring... just like the probability of rolls of the dice in Backgammon.

I feel like chess says a lot about a person… it’s one of those games where you can’t really fake your thinking 😄 It actually reminds me of The Queen’s Gambit… such a good series. ♟️

Go for pure abstract depth.
Shogi for a wild twist where captured pieces re‑enter the board.
Hive for portable, no‑board insect warfare.
Twilight Struggle for Cold War grand strategy.
Through the Ages or Terra Mystica for epic, thinky Euro‑style planning.

All of these really scratch that “outsmart them” itch 😈

as for chess... I never learned it so I don't know how to play it, and I kind of avoided it too just because of my my brain works... I know that if I ended up liking chess, I would end up obsessed with it, lmfao

my mind is way too curious, way way way too fascinated by these things so that's just why I rather not go that route

but Poker, I love that stuff... there's not only the analytical strategy but also the psychological one and that one, is even more interesting and entertaining to me... people

My favorite strategic game is not a board game. It's hearts. All you need is a standard deck of playing cards. Play anywhere. The rules are simple, you can teach someone to play in 10 minutes. Almost anyone can play. There is strategy but, there is still an element of random chance in the deal and other player's decisions that can derail a strategy at any time. Counting cards is not only legal, it's essential. It's also a lot faster paced than chess. For me, it's an indicator of how people process decisions and adapt to changing situations in life.

I prefer backgammon, but the best game ever is contract bridge. No board, lots of strategy, much more social than chess because it's a partnership game.
