Do you listen to jazz?

Question

It sounds nice, but it feels like it’s just background music you’d hear in hotel bars or boring cafes trying to look fancy. I wonder if anyone actually listens to it?

Rarely. The only one I listen to is  Mal Wadron  (full name  Malcolm Earl Waldron , born in 1925, passed away in 2002). I saw him in concert when I was a student. Just him and a piano. We were about 30 in the audience, not that the place was any bigger. In 1963, he suffered a serious breakdown caused by a heroin overdose. He got to the point where he couldn’t play anymore or remember his own name. It took him years to recover and had to relearn his skills, which he did in part by listening to his own recordings. His thought processes were too slow during that period to allow for genuine improvisation. I saw him in concert in the 1990s, I don't remember the exact year. Maybe what fascinated me was the way he could take a few key notes and play around that in a way that was captivating.

Last time i heard jazz was probably over 5 years ago when listening to Alan Watts's philosophy, he said "Everything that’s going on is just jazz. It is a dance. It is a game... the whole world is just a big act and we’re all playing our parts."

If it feels like hotel-lobby noise, you probably haven’t hit the good stuff yet. Try listening with headphones and focus on one instrument at a time, like the sax or piano.

Start with Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue”, Chet Baker, or Bill Evans at night. It suddenly feels intimate, emotional, even cinematic, not background at all 💿✨

I was never a fan, although some types of Jazz are fantastic, especially the kind with vocals.
Dixiland, New Orleans, Latin jazz and some big band stuff can be great.
But I agree with you, most of it is elevator music.
And I despise many types of jazz. It sounds like some guy noodling on a piano or wind instrument and going nowhere. Fuck jazz drums and acoustic bass. The music has no dynamics or trajectory. It doesn't build and crescendo. Nowhere does the beat drop and grab you.

Also, there's various forms of jazz, Bop, Scat, Smooth, Big Band, Jive, Modern, or the kind Al Jolson used to supposedly sing.

Nope. Not anymore!. The improvised broke the pattern, so it is annoying to me and also violated the system of real music. A. People who couldn't 'keep a tune' made up jazz. B. People who couldn't sing, they read rap. C. People who can't dance invented "new" break dance & hip hop etc. What is the common denominator of these 3?

I have two or three Jazz CDs. Because it's less intrusive, it's well suited for background music while you're learning or when you have dinner guests and want to converse.
