Have you ever met a celebrity of international renown? By that, I mean someone whose fame extends beyond your city, your province or state, and your country.

And by “met,” I mean actually interacting with them—shaking hands, asking for an autograph, having a conversation, or taking a photo together. Simply spotting them some distance doesn’t count.

While I’ve met a handful of local celebrities, the closest I’ve come to an international star is Guy Lafleur—though I’m fully aware that many people might not recognize the name. Still, he was very much an international figure, even if you’ve never heard of him unless you follow hockey.

Guy Lafleur was one of the greatest ice hockey players in the National Hockey League during the 1970s, ’80s, and early ’90s. He spent most of his career with the Montreal Canadiens, but also played for the New York Rangers and, near the end of his career, the now-defunct Quebec Nordiques.

I met him at a Coca-Cola–sponsored hockey event that featured skill demonstrations by a handful of selected young players—myself included. Afterward, for PR purposes, he came into the locker room and shook hands with each of us. He even asked me a question, though I can’t remember what it was. I was only six or seven at the time, so the details are fuzzy. What I do remember is that he was a very guy (get it?) —and that he seemed taller than my dad.

I have briefly met quite a few celebrities. David Carradine is one. I spoke to him and got his autograph.

I had the most interaction with Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams). I went to his house with a friend who was installing a sound system in his car. He was a super nice guy, invited me in, offered me brandied cherries, let me play his guitar, and introduced his wife and daughters.

I bumped into Richard Thomas (John Boy from the Waltons) at a Renaissance Faire. He was just shopping at a booth and I recognized him. We chatted for a few minutes. He was really nice.

I saw Clint Eastwood in the bar at the Hog's Breath Inn in Carmel when he owned it. I chatted with him briefly.

I chatted with the bass player for Deep Purple, Roger Glover, back stage at a concert.
I spoke to and got autographs from Stephen Stills and Graham Nash at a celebrity luncheon.

I have briefly met others, enough to say hi and shake hands.

All those meetings were before cell phones and selfies.

I met Mark Harmon when he was filming in the city where I live. I used ot work for company that sold uniforms and police equipment. We supplied uniforms to TV shows like Spenser for Hire, and Cheers. We did many movies as well. One time the guy I was dealing with brought in a civilian leather jacket that had a rip in the sleeve. He asked if we could repair it. We have a heavy duty stitching machine used on police leather jackets so I said we could do it. Thr guy came by around 5 oclock to pick up the jacket. Mark Harmon was with him and it turns out it was his jacket we fixed. He thanked us for doing such a good job, This was before cell phones so I did not have a camera.

Sadly no, I've seen some at concerts if that counts, and at work we had some celebs in the same building as me, but that is as close as I've ever gotten. Oh and they have replied to some of my comments on insta and twitter, but that was probably just the social media manager.

What exactly do you mean by "international celebrity"?

For instance, you chose the late, great Guy LeFleur. He was a celebrity in the US and Canada due to his NHL greatness. But, outside of hockey or the US or Canada hockey fans, no one would know who he is.

By Guy LeFleur standards, I can say I've met quite a few "international celebrities" then since I've met quite a few National Lacrosse League players.

But I've also met actors (and had personal time with them) and even met President Biden when he was Vice President. Does Biden count?

I worked at LAX Los Angeles International Airport for a period of years with TSA and while there I met face to face with many entertainers, one of who was Mr. Jon Voight, who still performs in film. He stopped and talked with me in the airport concourse and asked my name and we had a brief conversation. I met several actors and actresses while there.

Not into celebrities. However, I have met a certain artist/musician. She was very cuddly and had a funny American accent.

Yes, I met a number of well-known film actors when I lived in Europe. It wasn't a big deal like it is here. We were not followed around by photographers, thank God, like we are here, unfortunately.
