Why do so many people think you must understand lyrics to enjoy music?

Something that has really annoyed me when it comes to dealing with my generation in terms of overall entertainment but especially when it comes to music in particular is the notion that if I can’t understand it then I can’t listen to it or it’s not good.

Sometimes I see why other generations think Gen Z and thereafter are just a pack of idiots cause when was this a requirement? So many global songs aren’t in English. Fucking Despacito is one that comes to mind just oof the top of my head. Not to mention many more or songs that are just mostly instrumental.

But if you say that now your forcing it or trying to hard at that point when I have to explain something like that I don’t even want too show you a new genre or style of music but once that style of music gets super popular oh now you wanna listen?

It’s wild to me that people say and think like that especially after the recent superbowl performance with bad bunny where this was a big criticism that no one wanted to hear about while that was going on.

A lot of songs aren’t even about the lyrics it’s just about having fun and grooving to the beat and melody and half ya don’t even listen to the lyrics but just cause it’s in your language how it’s listenable.

It’s just such a stupid ass argument maybe I was raised or grew up differently or maybes it’s the times we live in our something bro but this and the facts that a lot of these people now refuse to listen or even watch anything that’s considered old and by there detention that’s like anything older then the 2000s with very few exceptions.

I feel like experiencing what are parents did was how early Gen Z thrived and learned about the past because all we really had was the reach our parents had till technology really shot up in the late 2000s and onward

Understanding lyrics in songs is one of last stages of learning foreign languages. Songs are sung in different world modulation and this make difficult specific words to understand.
I can understand 100% of text of a song but while hearing it first time I understand maybe 50%, however this differs in regard of song and artist.
On the other hand I don't think native English speaker understand Cannibal Corpses lyrics without text. Maybe singing "I cum blood" is something that children should sing in kindergarten without understanding they lyrics.

I don't know, I have mixed feelings. I guess it's because a lot lyrics are poetic and have meaning. But there've been songs I've been listening to for decades, and never knew what they were really about or take time to actually listen to the lyrics. But some lyrics are completely incomprehensible. Alice Cooper made this comment about screamo, but I feel it can apply to any illegable vocals. "If you're gonna sing like that, what's the point of even having lyrics?"

So I guess it boils down to, if the lyrics were important, surely the artist would have sung them more clearly.

Artists like Pink Floyd, Neil Young and Alice Cooper are lyricists, so they actually take ensure their lyrics are comprehensible. I'm only now starting to realize and appreciate the importance of lyrics.

I will listen to foreign songs, simply because they sound good. Occasionally, I'll translate one.

I don't think so, I actually prefer the melody, and as for the lyrics, I don't have to understand them at all, as long as I like the melody of the song.

The reason people ask you to listen to a song’s lyrics is because that’s part of the art that is music. No one’s saying you can’t enjoy the music itself, but the lyrics add more to it. Take the famous samba song “El Beeper” I can’t speak any Spanish but I looked up the lyrics to this song that I thought would just be a silly joke about dancing to the beeping of a smoke alarm. But no, it’s a call to unity through the power of dance, which I think adds a lot more to it than just a fun little samba song. I wouldn’t have known that because I don’t know Spanish well enough to translate the lyrics, but listening to the lyrics adds a greater level of understanding to the art you’re listening to, and maybe refusing to care about lyrics is equivalent to deciding that seeing a postcard print of a painting is the same as seeing the real deal.

You absolutely don’t need to understand lyrics to enjoy music. Rhythm, melody, harmony, vocal tone, production and vibe are universal. I grew up on foreign films and soundtracks, and half the time I had no clue what they were saying, but the emotion still hit hard.

Some people treat music like a podcast with a beat, so lyrics are everything to them. That’s valid, but it doesn’t make other ways of listening less “real.” I dance to K‑pop, cry to Italian ballads, zone out to Icelandic post-rock and I barely understand a word.

The “if I don’t understand it, it’s bad” thing is just cultural laziness and a tiny bit of ego. Same with refusing to watch anything “old.” They’re scared to feel bored or challenged for five minutes. Meanwhile, they forget that most club hits are literally nonsense lyrics over a good beat and they still love them 😂

Keep your taste wide open. Let them catch up when that genre becomes trendy and they suddenly act like they discovered it. You’ll know you were there way before the bandwagon 🚀🎶

You don't need lyrics at all. Music was meant to be instrumental. Vocals are just the icing on the cake but not essential.
