Why are historical movies always about big events instead of normal life?

You ever notice how American western movies are always about saloon shootouts, duels, and outlaws? In reality, most people were just trying to survive isolation and working hard putting ranching and farming. Or how any movie depicting the era of the Roman Empire is only about gladiators and combat? I understand that these topics are interesting, but it can’t be the entire story line every time. A good story can work no matter the time period you know?
