For a strategy board game, is it better to use simple combat or high-HP combat?

In the simplified system, most units die in one or two hits, regardless of what is hitting them (Like Axis and Allies maybe).

Advantages: Easy to learn and easy to master.

Disadvantage: hard to balance from design perspective.

In the advanced system with higher HP totals, most units die in five to 10 hits, depending on what is hitting them.

Advantage: Easy to balance.

Disadvantage: requires a lot of arithmetic each turn to play the game.
