Let me clarify. The question refers to the location in the musical itself, not where it was filmed or where the stage was. Note that almost all of these were major films as well as performed on Broadway, The West End, and touring companies. High schools and colleges still perform them on stage.

I’m a bit confused by what you’re asking. I grew up watching old movie musicals, including most all of those by Rodger’s and Hammerstein.


Oklahoma was supposedly set in pre-statehood Oklahoma Territory, but was never shot on any Oklahoma location. It was shot in Arizona and on Hollywood sound stages.


Carousel was supposedly set in the Northeast U. S. (Maine I believe); filming included several locations in Maine.


South Pacific was supposedly set an an unnamed fictitious Island in the South Pacific, but was filmed in Hawaii. No, Bali Ha’i didn’t mean it was set near a Indonesia.


Flower Drum Song was set in Chinatown, San San Francisco. There were some exterior SF shots but it was filmed mostly on Hollywood sound stages.


Sound of Music takes place in Salzburg, Austria and was filmed mostly on location there.


The King and I was set in Siam (now Thailand) but I don’t think any of it was filmed on location there.


It looks like the Pacific Northwest is the odd one out. I don’t remember any Rodger’s and Hammerstein musical being set there.

Don’t remember anything R&H did that took place in New York City unless it was the televised Cinderella with Julie Andrews.

Tahiti looks a flyer too since South Pacific took place on a make believe island.

Sound of Music was not a Rogers and Hammerstein work. It was written by some Austrian guy. I saw a travel show that visited the guy's family

Sound of Music was most certainly a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Although the Von Trapp family was real and the inspiration for the musical, Hammerstein wrote the libretto.
