What do you think about test screenings?

Seems some Hollywood folk just don't believe in it. Hmmm : I'd beg to differ or I'd at least say it's 50/50. I mean the fans are the ones who'd buy tickets, you know, for the finished product.

Sometimes I wonder if you know a blanket "no" you know, missed opportunities. Especially, say a movie didn't test or tests and ignores - then it just crashes and burns at the ticket sales, well, that's a tough day and a rough feeling surely. 😆

It’s become irrelevant with streaming. There’s very little marketing done for the majority of straight to streaming movies now. It’s production costs and hope for the best. The streaming audience IS the test audience.
The blockbusters still get some marketing. When you see cross-platform marketing, you know that they are fishing for the huge audiences.
I’m not sure if theatrical releases still do test screenings routinely. If they do, it’s probably not random people. Most likely it’s private screenings for relatives and friends of cast and crew.

Sometimes you wonder, if you asked me about the average Marvel tentpole or Marvel movie I would say "... a guy getting pummeled for 2 hours : 3 hours, isn't my idea of art." 🎨 🎭 But hey, will they ever wake up to that someday without lamenting incorrectly as superhero fatigue. Eh

Test screenings are good. They have been used for years. They often result in changes to the final edited film. In some cases, they causes scenes to be reshot, or even change the storyline.

Hollywood spends millions of dollars on test screenings for everything they produce. They travel to the most remote places to screen film & TV because you can't get an honest answer about a film in LA.

Test screenings are a necessary evil 😄

They can absolutely save a movie: pacing issues, confusing plots, unintentional laughs, all get exposed when a real audience watches. I’ve seen cuts at festivals that were re-edited after brutal early reactions and ended up much better.

But they can also sand off personality. Bold, weird, “artier” choices often die in test screenings, because audiences instinctively want clarity and comfort.

So I’d say they’re great as a tool, dangerous as a compass. Listen, but don’t obey blindly. 🎬✨

I hate the concept but I understand that studios would rather not release a stinker that everyone hates considering what it costs to make and market a movie these days.
