The Wizard Of Oz is the horror movie of all horror movies & I still get nightmares even to this day. Everything was all lollipops & candy drops & after that all hell breaks loose. First poor TOTO gets kidnapped & after that a killer tornado picks up a house & lands in a fucked up land with vertically challenged individuals. As for Dorothy’s house unfortunately when it landed it landed on an innocent bystander & instead of anyone doing anything Dorothy steals her ruby slippers & skips along like nothing happened. Along the way Dorothy meets three dudes. One with an axe. One with shit for brains & the other one was a scary hairy bastard. As for the haunted forrest was something. As for OZ he was a mobster & he hired Dorothy to do his dirty work & she murdered the star of the film, the WONDERFUL WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST, my hero.

Fuck you Dorothy & your red devil shoes!

@Screenwriter The Wicked Witch Of The West was my hero & I was really rooting for her & to be honest she did nothing wrong. In fact the poor lady was seeking revenge on Dorthy for killing her sister & steeling her slippers & by doing so the evil bitch Dorthy threw a bucket of water on her slowing killing her & after that Dorthy stole her broom. What a nightmare of a movie.

“Silence of the Lambs” is thriller, not horror.
“The Conjuring” is the best of those listed for voting. However, i put the original “Annabelle” above “The Conjuring” for the best movie in that cinematic universe. Meanwhile, “Halloween” is my favorite horror franchise of all time.

If you want modern terrifying vibes, I’d pick:

Hereditary – slow-burn, deeply disturbing family horror.
The Conjuring – classic haunted-house scares with great tension.
The Ring (Japanese or US) – iconic, eerie atmosphere.

“Best” depends on what scares you most: psychological, supernatural, or gore.

None of the above scared me to death, but my all-time fave is "Aliens." because of the hilarious space Marines and those nasty, nasty acid for blood giant scary soldiers and the egg laying "crabs" that infest humans with a new generation of soldiers and the smart queen.

H. R. Giger's awful aliens and the darkness of the movie with the wisecracking marines and relentless action and fear have not been topped by any newer films for me. Though "Hannibal" has been a high mark on recent thriller/horror genres.

"Best" horror movie is an oxymoron. Horror movies suck! But i'll give it to scream because it was such a popular movie at the time. I wouldn't really even classify scream as a horror movie.

The conjuring is probably the best horror movie here. But i'm biased because like Vera Farmiga. But look at the sequels it produced.

I'd suggest the remake of Friday the 13th. It shows enough story so you can skip parts 1-3 that weren't very good and then continue the series of movies beginning with part 4 after watching the remake.

@AngryCarl3 I don't blame you it was probably pretty intense to witness that back then. Mad people fainting, needing to be stretchered out, apparently one woman died. Then the chaos that happens on set which made people think it was cursed.
