I took some lunar eclipse photos 2 weeks ago from the middle of the North Atlantic ocean. They came out just okay because I didn’t bring my expensive camera but the i-phone 17 was better than expected but not great.
Try afocal photography (or afocal imaging). You use a telescope and use the phone lens against the eye piece of the telescope for a picture. I have an amazing picture in which you can see mountains and mountain ranges on the moon.
Don’t use department store cheap telescopes. A decent scope won’t break the bank. This type is the one I used : A Maksutov-Cassegrain (Mak)
However, a good cheap telescope for viewing lunar mountains and taking phone photos through the eyepiece is a tabletop Dobsonian in the 130–150 mm range.
Best overall cheap pick: Sky-Watcher Heritage 130P (or the slightly bigger Heritage 150P if you can stretch a bit).
I have an amazing far more expensive one but it is cumbersome to setup but for the moon these will suffice my other is for astro-photography.
I've been wanting a good telescope for quite a while. I'd pay big bucks to photos of the mountains up there.
Research which fits your needs for magnification etc. Have fun with it. On mine the mountains are clear and bright against space background as they were on the edge of the visible moon at about the 5 o’clock position. The moon wobbles so the position can change though. The pic was taken on a full moon.
Awesome! I'll see if I can try that out one of these years
Yes I do. I use a camera where I can put the exposure on manual and I start with an exposure that would be for daylight, because the moon is pretty bright. Then I look at the picture on the back of the camera, and adjust the exposure from there.
those are very nice 👍🏻
I have dozens of them.. but it’s definitely not easy to take a good ones.. I like this one 😊
That looks pretty sweet!
Got a great on of a total eclipse a while back where I live. We had 100%.
I was at work when the last one happend so I missed it. Much to my dismay.
I bet! Its all pretty crazy to really think about.
That's pretty rad!
I've seen a few eclipses but never got any pictures.
That's pretty awesome!
Ooh now that sounds picturesque. I'm on the wrong side of Lake Michigan to get sunset pictures.
Heck yeah that looks awesome
Truer words have never been spoken
I’ve tried so many times 😅 The trick is zoom plus stability. A tripod or propping your phone on something solid helps a lot. Tap to focus on the moon, lower the exposure so it’s not a white blob, and use a timer to avoid shaking. Night mode or “pro” mode makes a huge difference 🌕📸

No, I don't... But, instead, my 7 dogs and I...
https://www.youtube.com/embed/LplPi2CxNHIHa! That's clever
No they usually come out like a blob
That's still a pretty neat picture though. Looks like it could be an album cover.
@purplepoppy I know those feels. I also enjoy, maybe you do too purple, how much a full moon makes me fill good 🌕🌕 so round, so full - so, so - god it's just 👀 😋
And I'm spent.

With my 200mm lens and some post processing.
That's awesome!
It's just so - round 👀 🌕
Surely everyone loves the Moon for it's - perfection 👀 can't fault it
Can't find any flaws in its - round 👀 mouth watering roundness
No, never. I get better pictures during sunrise and sunset
Thats a darn shame
The moon is so beautiful
It is quite mezmerising
Not really. My pictures of the moon usually just come out as a white blob.
Then again, I am not a photographer using a fancy camera.
my phone isn't that good in the first place... lol
Yes, I have a 35 mm camera and have taken some good good shots. Some in black and white.
Yeah, actually. But I don't have them on my phone
As for astrophotography I’m into it just like wildlife photography & yes I have taken good pictures of the moon.
My shitty android always just makes it a grainy white sun 🥀
Grainy white spec/ sphere for me 🤭 - even when I hit Night mode
God do I try 😂 🌕
My phone camera has its work cut out 📱 🤳🏻
Crikey, look at that peach lady 🍑😋 I mean full moon 🌕🌕 🫣
Years ago, when I bought my nice Canon 70-200 zoom lens, I tried that as well. 🥸
Pretty much, yes.
90+% of such pictures are in the lens (aperture).
Not even close not like that no way
Never tried.
I haven't made any of the moon
@Paige2006 there's your itinerary or plan then? Take a moon photo like the struggling rest of us *holds Android to sky* click click 📱🤳🏻
No I didn’t
