What really makes something a chick flick or a guy show?

I think the best way to answer your question is simply by watching and noticing the hallmarks of each.

For example, watch almost any Clint Eastwood movie. Or, perhaps, "Predator", the iconic guy film with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even some of the lines are iconic:

Chick flicks - and I like a lot of them - are the sorts of movies you will see on Lifetime Movie Channel of the Hallmark Movie Channel. They are a guilty pleasure of mine when I am in a hotel.

I like Chick flicks but only if storyline is great..

I'd guess if it's a typical "romance" it's a chick thing, and if it's action, horror, sci-fi it's guy thing. But I grew up loving horror and still do, and I read lots of sci fi and love that genre. For grins and giggles, it's great to see all the action stunts in John Wick, James Bond, Bullet Train, Westerns, kung foo kind of stuff. (Kill Bill, Hidden Dragon)

This is me, though. I have tried to watch "The Way We Were," but 90% of those films are over the top, cloying., gagfests I'd rather laugh through crazy stunts and be wowed with horror/sci-fi.

IF a little romance is tacked ON to the guy genres, most watchers don't mind. But too heavy on the romance, call me a guy!

For me it’s less about who watches it and more about how it’s marketed and framed 🎬

“Chick flicks” usually center emotions, romance, friendship, self-discovery, with posters, trailers, and music targeting women. “Guy shows” lean on action, violence, competition, or dark humor, and are sold as “masculine.”

Plenty of women love “guy” stuff and men love “chick flicks.” The labels are mostly lazy marketing and stereotypes 💅🔥

When it appeals to a target demographic, if it seems emotionally appealing and taps into romantic tropes in a feminine way then it leans towards a chick flick.

I don't know what would be a guy show other than anything traditional masculine like car culture, action, thrills, guns, planes, trains, anything that explodes.

Most guy flicks involve either childish behavior or random violence for any number of reasons.
