Why would she do this?

there's this girl that i know and she doesn't like this guy at all; he's manipulative, a liar, and he talks bad about people behind their backs. she doesn't like him but she's nice to his face and is still in contact with him/still friends with him.

I don't understand why people stay in contact with people they don't like? when i don't like someone i keep my distance.

Probably to have less of a chance of him talking bad about her to others and wrecking her reputation with them.
