Why would my friend lie about a guy hitting on her?

So my friend was recently telling me about a guy who’s really attractive, had always had a crush on her. So when I was with her she said she’d followed him on Instagram and he’s followed her back. I was so happy for her because she’s liked this guy for ages. She said he would probably slide into her dms.

But I just found out she’d been lying to me about the whole thing, he never hit on her the other day and she didn’t even follow him! It’s small but I don’t get why she would feel the need to lie to me all this time?

Ego and social status, probably. We all want to be desired. Every last person wants to feel that there's someone out there who cares about us (seriously- this is an indirectly related life tip, but it's true of guys, too: making your partner, male or female, feel appreciated and wanted is one of the cornerstones of any happy relationship). In women, it's more pronounced, since social status is more tied to desirability. And since there's often no real way to verify that someone was flirting with, or even hitting on, you, it's an easy thing to lie about. It's kind of like the classic Imaginary Canadian Girlfriend.

Your friend is probably feeling low and insecure; it's not about lying to you, but about making herself feel better. It's probably best to just let it go- maybe do something nice for her to let her know she's appreciated.

To make herself seem 'cool' and happy. Just remember this episode because it's exactly what most people do when they're in a relationship and they talk about how their relationship is going. They never tell you about the negatives. Some who don't get that assume that everybody has a perfect relationship except themselves.

I get that, but they’re not in a relationship it’s not her boyfriend, it’s just a guy she has a crush on. So I don’t get the need to lie to me about it

There are people who lie about everything. She could be lying about 50 things and you only noticed 1.
