When someone dies of natural causes do you say they ‘died’ or they ‘passed away’?

I use them interchangeably. Also cool factoid… there is ONLY ONE WAY to cause a human being to die… That is Cerebral Hypoxia! (Latin for “Lack of oxygen to the brain”) as long as the brain is getting oxygen, you’ll be alive! Even if you starve to death, the organ failure resulting will eventually lead to a lack of oxygen to the brain, and you die! Seriously, Cerebral Hypoxia is the cause of ALL death in humans and other mammalians. The question is, “what caused the cerebral hypoxia”?

In Georgian we have a word გარდაიცვალა - meaning “passed away”, it literally means “turned into” “changed into” and I think that’s a beautiful word to describe death.

As if someone still exists he just changed his shape of life.

I use “died” and “passed away” interchangeably. I guess “passed away” is a more polite word, so I’d rather use that one more often.

I say they died. The only time I use a euphemism is if it's somebody close to me or the other person and it happened recently. Even then I usually say died.

Well people use 'passed away' as a way to soften the blow to people i guess. tends to mask the pain more.

I don't like the topic of death and the word "died" is really similar so I'd rather use "passed away". People might think I'm speaking too formally though.

I just say they died. Every time I say
"Yeah, he unfortunately died of natural causes.." my friends always gasp. I don't know what is wrong with just saying 'died'

Depends who I’m talking to I guess. I tell my kids their aunt and uncle passed away even though they got killed. Everyone else I just say they died.
