How often should I text my online friend (to maintain the friendship)?

I mean, I wouldn't text my friend if I didn't have anything to say in particular, though.

In my unknowing opinion: text it when you feel like it since it is probably not important. The Nigerian or Russian will get back to you...

you should text them when ever you want to. hopefully they want to text back just as much as you do... thats rare. dont waste time on those that dont share your entusiasim.
