If you had to save others from your own child, would you turn him in to the cops?

Any loving parent would protect their child. What if you had to protect your child from hurting others and destroying lives; hurting himself too since he'll be in prison for a long time if he does it.

Scenario:

You find a notebook or a recording, where it's your teenaged or young adult child explaining that he's going to commit a shooting spread or he's going to rob people at gunpoint to steal money. You have to protect him from himself... at the same time saving others. Would you turn him in?

I just saw one of those sad tale murder shows in which the parents knew their child had begun exhibiting violent tendencies, but they figured with more love and care, they could help him, but they came home to find one day that he had murdered their daughter in cold blood. It is hard as a parent because it's your kid, and you think, because you've raised them, you can still protect them or convince them not to do something, but running to my door after you've just robbed 12 people at gunpoint and asking for asylum can't happen from me. I picture the other families put at risk, their lives potentially ruined, and I'd have to turn them in.

A lot of parents whose children cause serious harm to someone else oftentimes say that their child was "good". No. Their child was not good. Good people don't go out with an intent to harm others.

The parents just refused to acknowledge there was a problem and by not doing so are as guilty, or even more so, for what happened as the child.

It is the parents' responsibility to look for & care for their children. That INCLUDES acknowledging that their child may have an anger problem, may lack in control, may have dark thoughts, may do drugs, etc.

By not doing anything about it then they shouldn't be surprised by what happens & their child ends up in jail. Or if they decide to attack someone else who'll defend themselves... dead

Absolutely. If my child is doing something or is going to do something that will put the lives of others in danger, you are damn straight I would turn my child in to police. I raised my child better than that, and if my child is going to bring shame to my family by doing something that goes completely against their upbringing, my child will be turned in.

And to all the parents who say they would not, you are part of the reason society is so messed up and you have NO right to be a parent. You are still a child yourself.

I'm fed up with parents who say, "He was a good boy," despite the fact he dressed like a total freak and his Facebook page discussed his going on a killing spree.

I don't like kids to begin with, so it is time to start holding parents liable for their brat's actions- no matter what their age. Lock a few parents up for life in prison and watch how fast others pay attention to their miserable and worthless offspring.

I think parents are the worst judge of character when it comes to their own kids because they want to believe in them and want the best for them. If you find evidence of your kids wanting to commit acts of violence on themselves or others, you should report them to authorities or the very least psychiatric care.

Sometimes doing the right thing isn't easy. Kids aren't as innocent as we like to imagine they are either. Some kids exhibit sociopathic tendencies at an incredibly young age. They can come from loving families as well. I know we all like to think of our children as a sweet and innocent blank slate but biology plays a role as well. Some people are just more predisposed to violent outbursts and behavior. Such is the reality we live in.

I would, except not because of a notebook.. everyone can write whatever they want in a notebook. I'd address this first but if I truly believed they're going to do something like that then I would turn him in. That would be the last resort though, I'd try to stop him myself first.

It would be good if we could prevent abuses and evils before they occur. Observing mental illnessess and helping the person who is infected before anything can go wrong. Without having to resolve towards violence like calling the cops , who themselves are mentally ill because they do not treat others goodly.

Yes I would, and if I walked in on them loading ip then I’d hold them at gunpoint until the cops came. I’ve already had to watch the hallway that leads to mine and my sister’s rooms with a handgun while my brother had a violent bipolar episode, so I have no problems pointing a gun at someone, but fortunately he never came through the hallway.

I don’t like these scenario questions but I feel like I would protect the people from the kid. Bunch of innocent people don’t have to suffer for a kid gone nuts. Then again, you never really know how a parent feel until you’re in their shoe.

Yes, but only if I could not stop him myself. More than likely I would stop him myself and get him the mental help he needs. I would also monitor his access to weapons and ensure he cannot have them until his issues are worked out. I have enough friends with the right combination of schedules to keep 24/7 surveillance. If I miscalculated and he went through with it, I would shoot him myself.

Yes I would. It would be heartbreaking but I can't let them keep hurting others. Maybe they'll learn not to harm others if they have some jail time.
