Is it rare for a man to be persistent in seeing his child?

My cousin was 22 when he got his then girlfriend pregnant. The couple broke up and neither his ex girlfriend nor the girl's mother wanted him to see his child (a baby girl) anymore. They would throw him out of the house whenever he came.

A couple of his friends tried convincing to give up, that he's still young, full of life and it's going to be too much trouble and money for him to see his child. His repeated phase was an ''I don't care how long it takes. Only dead would I stop fighting to see my girl''.

He was eventually allowed to visit his child (the procces took nearly 3 years though) and shared custody rights by court. He went all the way to suing them, going to court and all that hassle just to see his child. He could've give up already but nope, he wouldn't take no for an answer. Is this rare in a young man?
