There are many apps to keep kids safe online. Do you think that this one specifically is an invasion of privacy? The app BARK actively scans texts, camera roll, social media accounts, etc. If any type of concerning content is found the parents phone will be alerted with a snippet of what was happening. What do you think?
When I was a teenager, the whole idea seemed like a Sisyphusian task. No boomer had a chance at implementing electronic constraints against us. Ideologically, I was a pirate, information wanted to be free, and minors should have the right to explore the world and educate themselves through the this wonderful technology that parents didn't understand. Net nanny and firewalls seemed like a joke. Everybody knew where to find a proxy.
Back then the internet was a different place, Zoomers. It still had hope and optimism. People were excited for the potential yet to be realized. The total sum of humanity's knowledge delivered over fiber optic to anywhere on Earth.
Now the dream has become a nightmare. The internet is filled with lies and degeneracy. Though there is some reputable sources, and there are some online access to university, the good stuff is drowned in an ocean of shit. Good luck trying to find quality information under one hundred pop up ads.
Besides advertiser web pollution, there is the political diarrhea. Best case scenario your daughter will be exposed to tranny ideology on youtube. Worst case scenario a pedo hiding as a "gender activist" will try to sexually abuse her.
I'm sorry. It was our responsibility as geeks to keep the normies off what could have been the greatest evolution of our species.

I have used the Internet for over 25 years. It has not became harder to find what you want, and I mean good content by this.

Want quality information? Any library in a free country has computers which in itself have access to most journals, periodicals andl textbooks, to give just three examples, you could ever dream of. No subscription necessary. Where was that 25 years ago?

It's very hard to sort of look at this retrospectively because I grew up in a world largely before the advent of a cell phone in every hand. I got my first at 18 (gasp) when cell phones really took off. The advent of the internet on phones has really made it sort of out of your control as a parent. Anybody could find and/or interact with your kid and you may not even know it's happening under your nose because kids and teens famously tell their parents everything, right. I absolutely hate the idea of invading someone's privacy like that, but I think most parents would agree, it may be better to do that, then someone harms your child through their phone.
Okay I don't like the concept of parental controls however I like the ones which just blocks exclipt content and block the apps which parents wish to block. Kids have their privacy in safety this way. Like parents won't get every single details (which makes the child feel like their privacy is taken away) but they don't have to worry about their child getting exposed to something they shouldn't.

Blocking porn is weird to me because like parents also were teenagers they know what its like, so why are they blocking porn like that will stop anything let your child explore porn isn't the devil
The only reason I think they could be used for which is good is limiting the amount of time your child uses their device for
People should teach their kids to be smart online and not to go dating 35 year olds. Kids are like sponges and I think good parenting can't be substituted for some dumb app that doesn't let them do anything. At some point they will have to learn and experience stuff that you are blocking either way.
I love all the parent control apps. I used it with my younger siblings. I always check and make sure everything is safe nothing dangerous. Now a days you never know and you can't trust people. People called me a control freak but I really don't care. What is important is the kids safety. I am all in support for parent control.
As a minor, a child is essentially owned by their parents and legally often treated as property. Parents have every legal right to not give a child a phone and pay the bill, nor does the child have any expectation of privacy from a parent.
Become an adult and get your own phone, pay your own bill.
Sounds kinda paranoid actually. Kids needs their privacy too. Parents need to learn to trust their children and teach their children to be trustworthy. Let them explore and let them know all the consequences of giving so much trust online and let them understand how the internet works. Kids are curious and if they like to explore then explore with them.
I don't use smartphones & love that most. I have a web browser on my computer & no issues w/ parental controls as I have nothing to hide, nor be ashamed of - I think if you don't want someone seeing your "private" self that's an issue in itself - what do you have to hide?
If you try to argue this is an invasion of the child's privacy then you could argue all sorts of things a parent does to protect their child form harm are an infringement on the child's "rights".
The only rights in question here are a parent's rights to parent their child the best way the see fit. We as a society need to get the fuck out of parents' way and let them do their job the way THEY believe they need to, not the way someone else tells them they should.

I think it´s good because kids get restrictions offline as well why shouldn´t happen online plus there are areas online where kids shouldn´t be like for example in adult forums or other areas that aren´t safe for them.
Parental controls can be useful, but my experience with my kids is that I often had to turn the controls off to allow them access to things they needed for school. Besides, kids are really good at getting around controls.
It's funny. My parents tried to control everything about me when I was a kid. I watch porn every day now and play video games at 2 am. Yeah they sure encouraged me to be a nice Christian boy.
Not a substitute for adult supervision. If the child can't be trusted to use the devices responsibly, then they shouldn't be using them without an adult present.
I can see it's utility but many of them go way too far in my opinion. BARK especially goes too far. Life 360 is ridiculous too. Tracking locations and especially monitoring the speed of them on the road is very susceptible to abuse.
The only thing I agree with BARK is the social media accounts. I think it is ultimately better if the child never ends up getting one. Even as an adult, it has only caused problems for me, imagine what it would do to a child.

I think there are a few good ones on the market but some are easily hacked by most kids. I think parents should limit the places their kids can access on line and be aware what they are doing.

Great idea! One of my clients is the California DOJ and you'd be shocked (or maybe not) at how often older dudes (and sometimes women) pretend to be 11 to 15 years old in an attempt to lure youngsters to meet them.

I really feel that instead of subjecting them to superficial rules like screen time, and whatnot; you, me, and everyone right now, already having a baby or want to have one, must jump into the surprising world of the internet.
What children need, is a book, just like a constitution, with directions on pretty much everything imagined. Not something like a few set of rules that are obviously outdated and impractical in today's age (most of them).

I am going to disagree on this one. Okay privacy when they're 18. Now a days we live in a dangerous world out there full of sick creeps out there. As parents we care about the child's safety. What if a predator is trying to reach out to an innocent child? Parents we want what is best for our kids. I even monitored my younger siblings they get mad at me but I don't care they're safety well being is what matters
@Alwayreckles93 it's better to educate the kids and let them be free. It's not okay to be all up on a kids phone. It's literally the equivalent to reading a kids journal from back in the day. Being overprotective till 18 is gonna create a person who never had a childhood then lashes out by turning into a party kid in college. I'd rather my kids have a childhood then actually grow up and be a adult when they are in their 20s. The overprotective thing just isn't healthy.
