People who have scary/intimidating faces, but are actually friendly, how does your face impact your ability to make friends?

My friends husband straight up looks like a serial killer. He's the first person I'd ever met that without doing or saying anything immediately unnerved me and made me extremely uncomfortable. I refused to hang around him for a while because just sitting there he looked like he was trying to work out if he wanted to eat my brains sauteed or grilled. I honestly couldn't understand why she, such a bubbly person, fell for this guy. Eventually we were all at a party for a mutual friend and he laughed at something and his features relaxed and he looked, well, normal. It just made me feel more like he was less of a maniac. I've since told him my first impressions of him, thinking he would probably not be a fan of my description, but he said, he hears maybe not the serial killer part, but that he has a very scary face.

I played soccer with guys like that and being from Cambodia and Sudan did not help... We all got along but their lines were the lines of a harder life whose big break was a highly valued athletic skill.
