Friends responding to only certain parts of a text?

So I have two friends that I mainly text as they live so far away from me. They will ask certain questions such as what I am up to, how I am, plans, etc. So I will answer in enough detail that I am not being rude by giving one word replies but also not oversharing. Then will ask them a question. They don't acknowledge what I have said and will only answer the question I have asked.

From my point of view I feel that maybe it is because they only care about themselves. If they messaged me something that doesn't feel like a response is needed then I will try to make conversation about what they have told me. This way they feel listened to and keeps the conversation flowing.

I am honestly getting so bored talking with them both. They are the main ones to initiate a conversation but I try to message them first to show that I am interested in talking.

Would you take it as they only want to have attention on themselves?
