If you had three children and one of them passed away do you now only have two?

For some reason this is controversial.
When a mother/father is asked how many children they have and they say for example three but so and so passed away when they were so years old , apparently a very common response is "so you have two".

On the other hand I saw a woman who forgot that one of her children had passed and told someone who asked that she had 4 kids and when that person asked how old they all were she had to do the awkward "so and so would be 3" and then explain what happened.

So do you say you have one less to avoid the awkward/potentially uncomfortable conversation or do you proudly talk about all your children despite one not being around?
If you had three children and one of them passed away do you now only have two?
