How do you know if you have upset someone if they don't tell you?

Observe the person's non-verbal body language. Look for changes from what you noticed before. If you want to understand the changes, tell the other person the changes you observed (be specific) and let that person know you'd like to understand them. Listen to what the other person says without denying or rationalizing anything. You can ask for clarification, but don't come across judgmental.

If you choose to be impulsive, you will likely overreact. If you seek clarification, it's easy to diffuse the energy. The only fear we have is the fear of the unknown. Eliminate the unknown, and you'll eliminate the fear.

You can’t know that and you shouldn’t have to guess or estimate unless they are a child or their functioning as an adult is limited in some major way.
