Should you be told when someone in the family you're visiting is showering?

i visited a friend recently and when i got there i had to use the bathroom... the door was open a few inches but didn't hear any water running and it was day time so i couldnt tell if lights were on so i walked in and saw her brother naked getting out of shower... i was so suprised and froze for what seem like a few minutes

Yes, this is common courtesy. BUT... it also happens. In our house, there's one bathroom for the kids and their friends and the door stays open so the steam escapes. Sometimes if one kid is in the shower, the sibling has forgotten (or didn't know) so someone might walk in. It happens. So, yes, friends should be told, but I also don't think it's malicious or intentional.

Lol. Couldn’t tell if the light was on? Lol. You just have to look up and see if there is light coming out of any fixture. Even in daytime you can tell if there is natural light verse not. Unless the room has more windows then walls, in that case it would be an non-private bathroom. I’m still trying to make sense of it.

Generally it's the polite and considerate thing to do. My mom is the only one who really comes to visit unannounced; she has a spare key. She's gone in while I'm showering. Here's my deal: as long as you don't have to poop or drop a nasty fart, I'm fine with having certain company in the bathroom while I'm showering. But if I have to smell it, you're getting my hands

I was cleaning house and running the vacuum and I was naked and then a friend came in the house, said he knocked but I didn’t hear him because I was using the vacuum

My family is too large, if they were to say someone is showering, that would be a constant thing.

Here, you just close and lock the door... ofc if someone left it open a few inches they might of not cared or hoped that someone did walk in.

Maybe it isn't a big deal to them though.

I don't know about you or your family & friends. Myself I close & lock the bathroom door when I go in there. Odd part is I live alone. LOL

Yes, they either forgot to mention it, or they didn't know the bathroom was being used. Maybe they are very open about it?

They should close the door properly. And second, ask before using their bathroom. If someone is already using it they'll let you know.

It happens. I shower with the door open to let the steam out. It has happened to me more than a few times. At a friend's house if I see the light on I will always knock on the door.
