What kind of age are we talking about? I chose others. I mostly would say kids should be able to decide for themselves. That being said not always. An example where, I wouldn't allow it: I wouldn't allow a 4 year old to use a razor and get a bold head, because they think they want to try.

It was 1970 and hairstyles for men were long. My father made a comment "Isn't about time for a haircut" I looked in the mirror and agreed. So I asked him to cut my hair. It was a gamble but I was resolved to wear it no matter how it turned out. And so it began we cut each other's hair until I left home. I turned an adversarial relation into a relation of trust. I am 72 now it is all falling out anyway

Let the kids decide. Hair is NOT a hill to die on in parenting, let alone a battle to fight. The battle worth fighting -- and non-negotiable -- is that hair will be clean and brushed with a modicum of style. Hair is a really easy area of life in which to let kids have some agency and learn what they like.

It depends on age like kids under 10 should have hair that is decently manageable for the parent. Past 10 they are old enough to wash, brush, style by themselves so they should get to choose how they want it.

I just had this talk to my sister about this recently. She started letting her daughter pick her own clothes out but she regretted letting her because the shirts she picked out were “ugly”

She picked out those shirts because she likes them and that’s how she wants to dress and present herself. I think that’s all that matters

I told my kid -- wear whatever you want, as long as you aren't sent home from school. I don't like school dress codes but I wasn't willing to fight the school over them.
