thing is that he does understand that she is wrong for him and that he should leave her but he physically cannot. she gives him the hot and cold treatment and manipulates him all the time. she even asked him to stop being friends with me. I know my friend should just leave her but it's not easy for him. he is a huge people pleaser. he thinks that she will eventually leave him and then he won't have to. he is ready for the heartbreak. it makes me so upset but I don't know how to help

By the time you're thinking that he should leave her, is the main problem with it all. As a person who dated a person who was very close to another woman, I understand what she is going to. Or think I do. Leave them to have an opportunity to work on themselves without you feeling like you're a super hero. If in your absence he still feels the same, then you'll have your friend back. Maybe she is acting the way she does because she has to show you who is in control. It's a power thing.
Anyways that's my opinion...
You can't.
Just be there for him when he figures it out.
Speak your mind and let it go. Its his life, let him make mistakes.
