If someone demands an explanation why you cut contact with them, do they actually care?

Let me give an example:
I cut out two friends because they kept accusing me of being whore and other things that weren’t true. And they would say they were just “joking.” One day, I decided I had enough and cut contact with them with no explanation.
One of my “friends” noticed and she came up to me AT WORK where there’s people around and basically DEMANDED to know why I cut contact with her. And since there was people around, I didn’t feel comfortable talking about it where they can hear. In order to get out of the situation, I came up with a lie just to make her go away.
I didn’t want to lie but the way she came up to me I felt she didn’t deserve an explanation after that.

When I've demanded explanations, it was because I did genuinely care. But when people have demanded explanations from me, I've also taken the time to provide that explanation. So it's definitely something I take seriously. I wouldn't want to speak to anyone's intentions but my own.

I make the explanation extremely clear and I usually have a list of reasons that I don't want to associate with the person. I'll tell them very directly "I don't want to be your friend anymore because you did X, Y. Z" and then I tell them why those things were issues.

Usually, when I provide that explanation, the person recognizes why I'm terminating the friendship and respects my wishes.

It depends on the kind of person with whom the contact was ceased with. If the person was nice, kind, caring and understand and still the other person decided to cease contact with them then yes if the person asks for an explanation then it can mean they actually care.

However, if the person with whom the contact was ceased with had some good qualities but at the same time had some toxic qualities as well, like being manipulative etc and if such a person reaches out for an explanation then it is not that they care but it is their ego and pride which makes them not to accept and respect your decision.
