How has altruism evolved?

There are two friends, one of them will definitely die and the other one will survive if he runs,

if not, he’ll most likely die too.

He chooses to stay and fight to save his dying friend.

As much as it is a noble and an admiring thing we would all love to be able to do,

I am curious, what makes us sacrifice our own chance of survival in favor of somebody else’s?

Well... Humans live in packs. If a member of the pack dies, the pack gets weaker and more vulnerable. That's why You do whatever You can to save the members of Your pack. That's it about how altruism evolved. But humans themselves also have feelings (or, at the very least, used to have feelings). Sometimes, if a person You are depending on dies, Your life simply loses its meaning, so it's better to do whatever You can to save that person. After all, if Your life becomes bland and miserable, is it even worth living anymore?

Wanting to protect someone or something. When they make you feel happy, you do what is necessary to preserve it, to your own detriment if need be. Especially if they are vulnerable or weak.

Whenever you succeed in doing so, you never feel more alive. It doesn't even have to be life threatening, it's about doing something that others are too afraid to do as bystanders. It's also about doing the right thing whether you care about them or not. We are judged by how well we treat those who we don't have to treat well.

Like when this annoying kid in my high school was chased and pinned to the ground by three larger kids, they started stabbing him in the throat with a pencil and I heard him yelp. I screamed at all three of them startling them, yelling at them for what they were doing. That gave the other kid time to get up and escape. Those other kids turned their attention toward me, but for whatever reason, decided not to do anything.

Altruism exist. Well, you know I think a man who fight for others without anything in return is altruistic. However, with the way everything has become media attention, people have become media attention seeker rather than purely altruistic.

One example is when I had a flat tyre and I was tired that day and this guy came and tightened the bolts and went his way. No questions asked, no service.

However if it was some TikTok video then surely he would have gained a lot.

And atheist can be truly altruistic at times because they are doing the deed for good not not for God.

Only though I have is they call it brothers in arms for a reason. Intense bonds built though time and hardships can be powerful. Not that different from a mother/father and a child.
