I often tend to address strangers or people I recently met Sir/Ma'am
But some of them exploit that to make me look inferior to them and that kind of hits the self respect even though there's no law saying they should.. and thus I stop using those terms with them

Yeah I do the same it's just the respectful thing to do towards those older then yourself. But no I don't expect it in return even though I have been called sir plenty of times. But everyone where I live does it just sort of the culture here.
I'll also use sir or ma'am in place of a name if I don't know someone's name. And even I still may use Ms or Mr and their last name.
It doesn’t bother me in the slightest if i were to be addressed as ma’am, some people feel weirded out about it others don’t 🤷🏽♀️ what can you do lol can’t make everyone happy
Yes ! I had to drop that habit altogether because people gave zero respects back
Still I do so in return if someone calls me Ma'am else I'll say that you don't have to call me Ma'am
