Do any of you know people that are “hoarders”?

A friend, who’s grandmother recently passed, wanted me to look at a dresser drawer set that her grandmother had. My friend warned me of the mess but it was WAY more than I expected! It was like an episode of that show, “Hoarders”! She had canned vegetables that expired over ten years ago! A bedroom full of newspapers and shovels. You could not walk through her place without tripping on something. I was shocked. Do you know anyone like this?

My grandma was a horrible hoarder! When she was still fairly young, she had stacks of very old things, especially toys and kid’s books that had never been open! I always wanted to take inventory of everything she had, because I’m sure a lot of her stuff was worth money. Unfortunately, as she got older, all her things started disappearing. I think people were stealing it and she actually started throwing valuable things away. It makes me sick to think of it. I told my mom about it but she was happy that she was getting rid of things.

This woman does definitely have valuable things. The could make a fortune having a rummage. It’s crazy! She had FIVE brand new (never been opened) slow cookers! I bought one, because I needed one! It’s unfortunate about your grandmother’s valuables. The same thing happened to my mom’s dad. He was robbed blind by grandkids.

My mom. I don't know where she learned it from. My grandparents weren't hoarders. But yeah, and then she'll accumulate so much stuff that it becomes overwhelming for her to even try cleaning. So then things get dirty, complete disarray, etc. Fortunately, it's not a psychosis type thing, and usually if you bring it up that it's getting bad, I think she starts to feel self-conscious and will start fixing it a little.

If your mom felt self conscious after hearing about it then she wasn’t truly a hoarder. Just very unorganized and lazy. She could have also learned the behavior from depression or extreme anxiety

A borderline case, I would think. Two or three rooms in the house were quite messy and some corners had the typical stacks of... everything and nothing. He has since moved out of the house and in a small flat where is simply no space to really hoard much.

Yes. I know someone. It's a serious psychological illness. I tried to help someone with it, but it's not possible. People like this need mental health help.

Something went wrong with them many years ago. In my friend's case he was raped by an uncle as a child. The hoarding became some sort of coping mechanism that went wrong.

And usually it doesn't completely manifest itself until people are somewhat older: 40s+... There's some event that happens and the hoarding takes over.

All you can do is encourage them to get help. You can't do it for them. It seems very hard to get over. Good luck.

Unfortunately many! Delt w them with my rentals over the years. When renters left the shit or passed away 98% of the shit people hoard is WORTHLESS. You can't sell on eBay, offerup, etc. I'd say 75-80% you can't even give away or donate.

Yes. One of my best friends mom’s apartment. She moved into her studio apartment soon, we went to visit, you can’t walk around it… no idea which way to look because there were so much and all filled up all over the place.

I honestly don’t know how people can live like that! It could not have been healthy for her! It wasn’t just a “paper” mess. There was old food laying around, dead mice, mouse droppings, there was even a dead bird! Gross!

Yes, I met a few hoarders in my lifetime and it was insane , with the shit that they had and you could barely walk around there home. It’s definitely a mental disorder

I used to buy cell phone after cell phone that were prepaid, and they were from Boost Mobile, Cricket, AT&T and this was a box full of phones and chargers I gave them away and that was the end of my phone hoarding.

I know one for sure, and I've known a few others that I suspect are hoarders.

Not personally, but when I used to inspect homes I encountered two. One was 'cluttered', the other was filthy.

Next door neighbor was skitzo. They had pathways through each room. Her family just allowed it. It took three full sizes dump trucks to empty and an enormous pile halfway up the garage door left behind. It's mental illness. They need help.

Sort of, but not very well.
It's more like I've known of them.
Every once in a while we get a call and it turns out to be a hoarder house.
