If you live in a bad area, would you pick your roommate up from work?

This question was asked to me for safety reasons. A person I know works a 15 minute car ride away from the apartment they stay at with their roommate. Let’s call them Ash. Ash gets off at 10pm. Their roommate “Ryan” will pick them up if they’re home. They live in a bad area and Ash legally can’t drive. Ash usually carpools with a coworker that lives nearby but whenever the coworker isn’t there, Ryan will pick up Ash if he’s home. Would you personally want to pick them up when they need a ride to make sure they return home safe?
