Why do some kids usually answer with one word answers?

They don't know how to elaborate things. I've learned not to ask closed ended questions. So instead of saying how was school today? I will say something like what happened at school today or what was the best part of school today. Or even one that can connect with them like Which teacher annoyed you today lol. Things like that 😊

because they are more attentive than average, so they attached it to your questions:

They more than likely have several conversations on the go at one time, and much like a Grandmaster at Chess, they answer and move on to the next one!
