She is beautiful but short and is professionally qualified. But she has a minor thyroid problem she says.

Has any of you dated a person with thyroid problems ? Are they worse ? I have read that these problems are genetic in nature.

How worse can the thyroid problems get ?

I think I have already fallen for her although I have not talked to her in person. :-(

She is 4'11" and I am 5'6". How will we look as a couple with regards to height ?

This is an arranged marriage and not a love marriage. In an arranged marriage, the parents of the perspective groom talk to the parents of perspective bride. They ask each other about the expectations of their bride and groom. The girl under consideration is not the only girl I am looking forward to marry. There are some more girls that I can get to marry. But I want to assess a girl for her personality, character & confidence.

If there is a normal girl and if she does not have personality & character as good as this girl I am talking about, then I want to marry this girl only. In which case I am concerned because I was unaware whether thyroid problems are serious or not. Which is why I asked this question.


And there is no question of love here because in arranged marriages, love happens AFTER marriage.

Here,I find many persons criticizing you with your legitimate doubt regarding thyroid disease in an arranged marriage. Coming from the same life conditions, I could understand your doubt.

My answer is straight and truth. Surely there will be a long queue to mock me here.

1. Thyroid is not an easy curable disease as most think or most doctors explain. It is from genetic disorder or will be in future.

2. The patient will need life long treatment and proper balance of hormone should be ascertained periodically. There is no stop for checkup and medication. It will go till their end as per today's medical history.

3. The patients mostly have one or combined symptoms, when their hormone are out of balance. You need to watch them and take them for treatment, when they come with the symptoms- emotional disorder; lack of sex appetite, libido, weakness, lethargy, acute/ body pain, migraine, ache, depression, change of body metabolism, constipation, low/high cholesterol/blood pressure, disturbed menstrual cycle, infertility, miscarriage, giving birth to child with cardiac disease/ neuro failure and child with low IQ. Prenatal death are also predicted.

4. You are impressed by the girls charms and her education. In that case, imagine a luxurious automobile car working with high power engine, costly interiors etc., but with a blunt tooth gear wheel. Gear is important to control the drive. Thyroid disease is similar damaged gear. You may find it difficult to control unpredictable change in the speed of the vehicle on move, such as breakdown or crash speeding.

5. Please google - Thyroid disease and divorce or thyroid and married life or thyroid and sex life. you can cross not less than 1.50 lakh failed married relationships due to neglected hypo/hyper thyroid or undiagnosed thyroid disease.

6. In your case she is diagnosed and under control. However it is not a onetime treatment required disease. You may need to fund her the whole lifetime with medication and 99.99%, your child will carry a thyroid deficient gene either with him or to be passed over to their generation.

8. And my personal opinion is, as you are attracted to her beauty and her education alone now, in course of lifetime, you may need some personal love or care from your wife. While writing all this bullshit, did you even once thought about how it would affect the mental health of someone with thyroid? Do you even know want a person with thyroid goes through, due to such pointless taunts of society. You should have done proper research before writhing such rubbish. Let's look at it this way.

1) I am 5'1" and my wife is 5'8"

We get along. So can you.

2) I had long informed my wife of my health condition (not thyroid but something that needs surgery now and then). While I warned her first of my surgical scars, she was shocked for a moment but got over it.

People with thyroid problems are just like everyone else. It's not something you should worry too much about. When properly managed, people with thyroid problems live long, healthy, happy lives.

I was diagnosed with a thyroid issue when I was 9 years old. I will always have it. And I would hate if someone decided not to date me because of the issue. Yes thyroid conditions can be genetic. However, the odds of your kid having it, are not that big. If it does not run in your family, it should be fine. And if a child does have it, all they need to do is take a pill everyday. It's not a big deal. All it means for her is that her body does not make enough of a specific hormone. That is all it is, she is not any less of a person than anyone else.

I don't know why you are worrying so much about superficial things. Her height and her thyroid issue shouldn't be that big of a problem. You should love her for who she is, not because she is a certain height or doesn't have health issues. A lot of people have health problems. You are still young, but I am sure you will develop some too. Most people do with age, so I wouldn't count this against her. It's pretty manageable.

My sister has some thyroid problems. She found out about it when she was 16 or sth and her thyroid was a little bit enlarged (compensating for low hormone production) so now she takes pills with extra hormones so the thyroid won't continue to grow. She is now 20 and looks no different to anyone else.

It is genetical but if you are worried about future kids, you just take a blood sample and check and then put you on pills if the hormone level is too low.

So nothing to worry about.

About the height, I don't think the difference it too big.

I understand your position and I think that you are worrying too much about aesthetics. A thyroid condition can be treated, more often then not, successfully. It is great that you think so highly of her already. There are many men in my town from India and their women are all shapes and sizes, as well as traditional and non traditional, so stop worrying so much. If you have fallen for her why are you asking that? none of that should matter. if you wanna know how bad it gets look it up. But not to see if you wanna deal with it. you should be supportive in doing what it takes to keep her healthy as I'm sure she would you., if you were married and she said she had cancer 10 years down the road would you decide not to be with her or would you fight it? don't focus on the health issue as a fault.

ok, if you are letting a thyroid issue get in the way of marrying someone, then my answer would be no. don't marry her because she deserves better. her height shouldn't matter to you. when you love someone you don't care about the little things, height is no issue. a health problem is something you work with them on. you support them. you don't sit there and wonder whether or not you want to marry this person (who you hvae not met yet) because a health issue.

I am not shallow. I just wanted to know whether it is safe to marry her or not. When I googled, it showed symptoms like increased heart rate, which is why I got alarmed and asked this question.
