Have you ever lost a pet?

I mean, not a dying pet, but a missing one. So many people where I live have lost pets--especially cats. Yesterday my neighbor's girlfriend lost her cat. The cat was on the balcony a door from me. They can't figure out how the cat went missing from the balcony. She was always outside enjoying the sunshine, and yesterday I heard them looking for her and shaking a box of her dry food. The girlfriend is on distress and has done nothing but crying for her cat. Today flyers were made to pass onto neighbors. They are keeping their garage door open with the litter box in front and food/water, but the garage faces the front of where the cat went missing in the backyard. I'm in a condo complex and there are a lot of vines in the back yard, where the cat disappeared. The thing is below the balcony is another neighbor's large umbrella and table. The cat could have somehow fallen or jumped, from the umbrella to the table and into the vines. I hate to say it but I have seen hawks around here that can carry away cats, but I never mentioned that to them.

So, did you ever have a missing pet, and how long was it gone for? I'm really hoping it comes back for this lady's sake.

Yes, having access to the garden, a few times some of our cats went missing. Only one never came back in spite of our efforts, a black female with a white spot on the tip of her tail, had been harassed a little too often by another of our cats. Although many years went by, I still think of her hoping she found another home.

Some of our cats died, but now I still have two older cats, a 19 years black and white one, and a red one who's 15 years old. The latter went once missing, but after many efforts and inquiries, among others with the police (normal procedure here), I at last found him in a clinic for animals. Briefly: he had been mishandled badly by some idiots, and was found on the side walk with his left side paralized. He recovered after a few weeks, but his left side remained partially paralized, which does not prevent him from walking around, although a little clumsily.

Cats are wonderful animals when it comes to adapt to new situations without complaining. Somehow a lesson...

Many years ago, we had a gray cat. Always stayed inside the house. One day, he got out and went missing. We looked everywhere for him, and eventually gave up. Our young kids were very sad, crying. About 2 weeks later we heard something scratching at the front door. It was our cat, a little worse for wear, missing some clumps of hair and thinner than when he left. He never went outside again, even when we left the door open for a few minutes, he took one look at it and stayed inside.

I learned a long time ago, if you have a pet, you must treat them like a child and have a constant eye on them or keep them in the house, and I have always done that. Even so Tuffy got out, and got injured in a cat fight and required vet car for his injuries.

Yes, someone stole my dog out of my car while I was in a store for 5 minutes.  It was a day that still gives me nightmares to this day.

my cats do have access to the outdoors, and discretion to explore and wander, so... there's been a time in which they took way too long to report back, more than 8 hours and I do not see them come back, that's when I do start to look out for them

and yes, I know it might not be the best nor the safest policy but... they're happier this way and love to live their lives this way, they do like to go out for a round sometimes, and they're very careful themselves too
