One of my pet rabbits passed away yesterday
I'm so sorry, Lemia. Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking. They are like family members.
I've lost many. I had pet snakes and lizards when I was young. I particularly loved the California king snake and was particularly sad when it died.
I later had a 70 gallon aquarium full of exotic fish.
Reptiles and snakes aren't quite like family members, though.
Our family had 3 pet dogs (one at a time). The last one took his last breath as I sat next to him, comforting him as he was dying. That was heartbreaking.
I didn't have any pets after I moved out on my own.
When I got married, my wife wanted a pet but I didn't because we lived in an apartment and both worked full time.
But a couple months later, I was driving somewhere on my job and - long story short - rescued a tiny kitty, moments from certain death, from the white line of a busy highway.
I took it home and, again - long story short - we officially adopted her. The vet said she was 5 weeks old.
The highway where I found her was Rosecrans Blvd, so we named her Rosecrans - Rose or Rosie for short. She was frightened at first but soon decided that we were her mommy and daddy.
We moved with her twice and then a third time into our own home in the country. We kept her indoors because we couldn't bear to think of anything happening to her. She was the best kitty ever and lived to almost exactly 22 years old. I was by her side when she passed away peacefully on Dec 10, 2019. My wife and I knew the time would come and were surprised that she had lived so long, but we were absolutely heartbroken nevertheless.
I put her blankie in a box, curled her into it like she was sleeping. In our yard, there was a bush with one rose on it in mid December. It was a perfect red rose and seemed to have been there like a miracle just for our little girl. I laid it in the box with her and we buried her in our back yard next to the other kitties.
They all had similar, loving burials and their graves are marked.
Once we were in our home and still had Rosie, we adopted two older cats, Kiri and Sofi, to keep the mice and voles in our garden under control. We let them out during the day and brought them in at night. Kiri, in particular was a wonder cat. But they were both sweet and we loved them.
When they passed away, we adopted two more older cats, Tinker and Cassie. They were also very sweet.
The passing of every cat was very sad. We loved them all.
Then we got Coco, a chocolate brown, full-blooded Burmese, from some people who were moving when she was about 6. She weighs 5 lbs, has sleek fur and is built like a panther. She and Rosie were our kitties until Rosie died.
We still have Coco. We used to let her outside during the day, but she went blind about a year and a half ago, so she's an indoor kitty now. She still get around the house quite well, is happy and, at close to 19 years old, is very healthy.
Then my wife adopted a 4 month old, marmalade-orange, very furry boy that we named POTUS (Poatie for short). He's part Maine coon and now weighs 16 lbs and is 3 1/2 years old.
He's a good boy and is nice to his little sister. We also keep him indoors because his fur gets full of stickers.
Finally, my wife got a gray bunny named Pepper recently. We keep him in a comfortable hutch outside. He has gotten used to us and loves to be petted.
