Have you ever had a pet die?

Today, my baby passed away in my arms. He survived from 10 a. m. today and passed away at 2:20 p. m. Up until today, he was eating and doing well. This morning, I realized something was off. He refused to eat and was hardly able to walk. I thought he was simply not responding when I called out for the puppies last night. This morning proved different because he was barely walking. He made it so far just to see me come out my room after waking up. I was thinking that he became ill after eating something unhealthy. I covered him with a blanket and spoon-fed him water. I cleaned his mouth, etc. I was doing everything until the veterinarian opened tomorrow. I was providing all nursing care for him. He was trying to drink water, and even walked around. When I picked him up again, things took a turn for the worst, and I knew it was over. In my arms, he passed away from what proved to be porvo. He was part of 4 puppies. I am still confused because he was perfectly fine and healthy. All puppies were getting vaccinated tomorrow anyhow.

Saturday morning, I had to put my 14.5 year old dog down. It was quite the ordeal that morning - the end of about 3 months of worry since his first majore seizure on 27 OCT 2024.

GOING FORWARD:
Don't bother waiting for your vet; you go to an emergency vet. Emergency vets are 24/7/365. After that first big seizure I mentioned, I called the emergency vet 45 minutes away and I took my dog there. I was there from about 10:30 PM and got home around 2:30 AM.
This was the emergency vet I called:

Now, that's in the Saint Louis area, but, often, there's an emergency vet in most places. You could also possibly call your vet while closed. A few years ago, we called our vet late at night and she went into the office and took care of our dog. For when the vet office is closed, our vet has an emergency number to call.

Now, if you ever have a dog who doesn't want to eat, that's an immediate problem and you seek vet help right away... and that includes seeing an emergency vet if you have to. Time is critical.

I am so sorry for your loss. What a sweet looking pup. Yes, I've had pets die. All of them basically from old age. It is gut wrenching.

Young puppies might need milk. But the agony of separation and mental issues of being a puppy might cause some of them to die. When we got our dog 23 years ago ago who lived 16 years, the breeder told us we would have to wait almost 2 months to pick him up because young puppies are weaker and need specialized care and affection from their families and nursing initiatives from trained staff. After 2 months, he would be healthy enough for us to buy him and take him home. For 2 weeks after I got the dog, I was home 24 hours a day to offer him emotional support because he had been separated from his family after we adopted him.

yes, sadly i just went through this again a few days into the new year. it sucks, it hurts, but my dog was really old and just couldn't function anymore 😞

i'm still not over it and probably won't ever be, but it will take awhile to heal and be able to be okay with it

I am feeling sad for you. It's a life and for myself that life is as important as human life. Our mammalian minds interact even if they don't know much English.

My cat passed a while back and I am still occasionally seeing him in the corner of my eye. He had an aggressive tumor and within a few days of noticing he was swollen, needed to arrange end of life.

He had several human friends and they came to say good bye to him. We had an in home service so his last moments weren't stressed.

With any death it is more traumatic if it is sudden and unexpected as your pup's was. So I am feeling for you.

Yes, I gave had pets die. I recently had my cat put to sleep. He was 20 years old. He could barely walk and I do not think his vision was very good. He was in renal failure. I had him rehydrated twice. I could not prolong his suffering. It was really hard to do this. He is buried in my back yard and I say hi to him every time I mow the lawn. He loved his little back yard

I have had two pets die of old age. Even though I knew it was coming, it was still really hard. It kept me sad for a long time

Yes, all dogs. The first one had to get put down the day after my grandfather died. Almost as bad as that was that we had to get on the road to travel for Christmas, so no one could be there with her.

The other two just got too old and also had to get put down.

Sometimes you just get unlucky with young animals, they'll inherit some immunity from the mother but it soon wears off leaving a small window of vulnerability until vaccination. Unfortunately at that age they're immune systems are dealing with attacks from all angles, and if something serious comes along they're easily overwhelmed. Main thing to remember is it's just bad luck and not your fault.

Sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a beloved pet. I've lost two dogs in my life, as well as fish, gerbils, hamsters and a guinea pig. Though it's sad when our pet is no longer with us, it's good to remember the good times we had together.

Unfortunately yes, most pets do not live anywhere near as long as humans do even with top of the line care. I've found that the best thing to do to avoid being emotionally destroyed by it, is to have many pets.
