I’ve had a credit card before and it didn’t pan out too well. However, I want to prove to my family now that I can be disciplined enough to have one.

Another misperception.
I am an addict; it's a fact so I am not going to deny it... and I am financially responsibly. I've never had a credit card... I have had loans or items which had to be paid for in instalments.
My 'poison': Cannabis
I smoke £400-£500 per month away and that doesn't even cover a whole month; about 2-3 weeks, if lucky.
When my money comes in I first pay my bills, then I put sufficient money away for food, I buy the items I need to care for my Ferrets, I buy whatever else I may need that month... And then the rest is wasted on Cannabis.
Under bills falls of course any other kind of, financial, obligations too. When Items had to be paid for, I didn't pay the bare minimum so I would have more money available for Cannabis; I paid off more than 500% per money to speed up the repaying.
Now, of course I had to learn things the hard way... I strongly feel I have never been taught to be financially responsible and thus it has taken a long time before I did finally become responsible... But if I can do it, I am sure many addicts can too.
My family's needs came first; then mine... I have done my best to balance the 2 as best as possible. Despite the ex and I not having a high income at that time, we still had around the £500 left after food and bills; she just wanted to have it all for herself. I did quit, 2x... the last time, when all our spare money was available to her and her alone because I don't have an awful lot of needs: She went asking my permission to buy make-up for £10 when her sister or dad sitting next to her. Why do you think she did that? Exactly, to make me look bad... she's been destroying me behind my back for 10 years, no lie was too disgusting to use.
An addict doesn't neglect him- or herself due to addiction; an addict neglects him- or herself due to mental health problems.
I have always put a lot of care in my appearance (also the 5 years I used Speed, XCT and Cocaine late teens/ early 20s); my living space always looked emaculate... but yeah, there are some things I do neglect myself with; I am not the best of eaters. I've had stomach/ bowel problems for the past 10 years (nothing is being done other than assuming I have IBS); eating is not pleasant experience for me and no matter how much I eat I am still hungry (I do spend £40-£70 on food shopping; and while my diet isn't great... I do buy more healthy food than 'Junk Food').
Impossible, you give an addict their vice and they are off the chain
