Has an in-law ever tried to do anything criminal to you?

So here is the requisite this did not happen to me, it happened to someone else, not even someone I know, but it was in the news where I'm from.

The story goes that this lady and her husband were subject to a "drug intervention" by his mother, her mother in-law. Here is the twist, every 6 hours like clock work, she is required to take immune suppressants, because she is the recipient of a donated organ. Kidney I think. So every 6 hours she is required to take between 4 and 6 pills. MIL being a Karen I guess, assumed these pills were narcotics. So thinking they are narcotics she held a drug intervention where she trashed this person's pills, pills that were keeping her alive. When she found out about that, her husband called the police, her mother in-law and brother in-law were arrested. The police offered to have someone dumpster dive for the pills. She declined because of being imun compromised. Instead she called her transplant team and got a lot of it replaced.

The MIL is facing charges for theft, trespassing, and attempted murder, cause if pills weren't able to be acquired her daughter in law would have within days died horrible painful death.

I just can't understand someone being so stupid as to not understand that just because a person has to take a lot of pills, does not mean that they are drug addicts.

I think this MIL meant well but she was misguided into thinking these pills were narcotics and going to kill her; this MIL probably didn't think this DIL wanted to live and was possibly suicidal, so, she went against common sense in an attempt to save her DIL's life. This MIL probably did not think through the possibility that if she was wrong in thinking the pills were narcotics that the mistake might endanger DI''s life.

Although this was an honest mistake on MIL's part, the law doesn't see it that way and assumes the person ought to have known and trusted that DIL was on immunosuppressants to have acted maliciously.

Yes, this MIL can be deemed a petty criminal in the sense that she technically did steal another's property and trespassed on private property. However, murder? That's not something people can outright assume but they do, anyways.

For all the jury knows, it might have been the case DIL was a druggie in the past and got clean when she married. This might have prompted MIL to think DiL rebounded, so, wholly reasonable for the typical MIL to think and act quickly.

Maybe. But the woman in the story had never done drugs. In order to be a candidate for the kind of transplant she had, drug use of any kind, in her entire history would have disqualified her.

Are people going to fault this MIL for thinking that DIL, once a druggie and possibly a rebounder at any given time, was poised to kill herself?

I don't know. People can say MIL is stupid or lacking common sense but we all know that people can resort to what they know to do some crazy sh! t to themselves.

If, hypothetically, this DIL wanted to kill herself, would this MIL have had the right otherwise to take that decision away from her?

The law usually applauds people for acting to preserve or save a life despite the circumstances but then again we don't know what was going through DIL's mind at the time or what conversations between them might have prompted MIL to take action. Could have been a misinterpretation on MIL's part that she thought DIL was speaking as if she was suicidal (could happen that DIL was low on energy and seemed depressed). Not uncommon.

Immuno-suppressant pills could potentially cause a person to lack energy and seem very much depressed to the point of suicidal ideation even if it's not outright told to somebody else... people read between the lines; it's how humans learned how to adapt and survive.

Would people fault MIL for that?

I don't think most would if MIL considered DIL her family member worth saving.

The woman in question had no history of suicide or drug use. The mother in law was putting her nose where it didn't belong. That's the crux of it. She chose the path, even after the daughter specifically told her the meds were for her transplant. The mother in law repeatedly told her she was lying. That transplants do not need such meds. So yes her heart was in the right places, her choice not to accept the truth is what makes her wrong here. And it's what makes her deserving of punishment. Some of the meds she threw away cost her over 2000 dollars per month. All of it immune suppressants. If the mother in law wasn't so negligent, and she actually did some basic research before acting, this would never have happened. Oh and this is an old story, the mother and brother were convicted on all charges.

When I meant druggie I meant a recreational drug user but in this case, it's wholly possible the woman in question could have abused prescribed drugs before which could have prompted MIL to disbelieve her on the onset of being told these pills were for her transplant.

I can't say that disbelieving a person is unreasonable. People abuse prescribed drugs and even harm themselves to get their hands on prescribed drugs whenever they end up in a hospital ER or whatever department. Sure, the relationship could have been strained but even so if this MIL believed herself to be her guardian in some capacity then at times a caregiver might go against the statements of a patient, even.

For example, this woman could have had drugs prescribed to her and had a friend or somebody she knew do the same when they didn't need the drugs and that would have been how she got the extra drugs on her person, 2nd hand, undocumented, of course, though wholly legal to have been given to both.

It might have been the case this woman asked her doctor for extra or higher dose but this doctor declined for whatever reason. She could have been in a lot of pain and resorted to this route in getting her known person to get the extra drug dose but it might have made her much too dependent on the drug in the end. This is how she could have fallen into the rabbit hole.

You're pushing "could have's" when none of this happened. Like at all.

In some parts of the world, such women might be too embarrassed to admit to authorities that they had a drug habit or problem they never intended to have and hide behind the prescribed drug documentation to enforce that. It would be hard to find the extra pill bottle but it would be possible to see if somebody she possibly knew was prescribed the same after the time she asked her doctor.

If she had a drug habit then likely this other person would have periodically and consistently been the one to give her the extra drugs and would have never ceased being prescribed these drugs until about the time she was in recovery and about to marry.

Yeah that's not how it works in the states.

Yeah, sometimes women as a gender and sex tend to cover up these facts for emotional reasons and also because society probably would have shamed her for it. I don't know where this case took place but men are far more likely to admit to being a drug abuser than women are; guys probably would be all on board to say they were doing x, y, and z as some way of bragging, too.

Well, we could surmise whatever other reason she wouldn't have believed her if not for the prior drug use.

I've never had to be in this situation, so, I can't say whether this woman was right to disbelieve her or not. It seems she very well did intend to kill her but then again who would have had time to research before taking her pills away?

I mean, nobody is likely to sit a MIL down and explain every detail about how immuno-suppressants work and what they do. Most likely this MIL was just told off-hand that the pills were for the transplant and left it at that.

That's the problem, it shouldn't have to be explained, she should listen. Unfortunately most women like her refuse to listen, and at least in this case she is seeing prison time for her choices.

And I will say this one more time.. Just once. There was NO prior drug use. None. They did a hair follicle test prior to the transplant to test for this, and yes prescription drugs show up, as well as everything else...

So again. There. Was. No. Prior. Drug. Use. Drug use is not part of this conversation nor is it part of the story.

Nope, I do genuinely wish my girlfriends family will start shit. Her dad felt it was OK to literally beat her until she pissed blood as a kid. I'd love to return the favor.

Now me and my man's inlaws did stuff that was illegal, but it was OK in the end

Oh God that poor girl, please give her a hug.. I can't imagine hurting my daughter like that if I had one. It makes me sick and want to tear up at the same time.

She was 13 or so I think. Long story that I don't have permission yet to tell. Sorry but that's about the high point for her growing up.

Thankfully I'm very focused with my strength and aggression but the fact it affects you so much, proves you're a good man.

Pines is really similar in that regard. Sweet but doesn't always remember his strength so he breaks stuff a lot
