I live alone, but no no one ever had to ask permission in my family to eat something that's in the refrigerator... The only exception would be if they know that it was specifically intended for someone else in the family. Then out of courtesy that might ask them if they are going to eat it or not before they eat it.

Otherwise no matter who bought it, if it was in the fridge we considered that it was for anyone in the house.

It's different if you have roommates for example. Then they might each buy their own food so I wouldn't eat someone else's food without their permission.

Same at work. We had a kitchen in our office and people would bring their own food. You wouldn't eat someone else's food, that would be wrong. (Although I occasionally had a missing sandwich or two when I went to eat... Those rascals!}

I guess on some rare occasions if there was something special in the refrigerator or freezer, some unusual thing, out of courtesy someone might ask hey do you mind if I eat that last piece of pizza? ... Something like that. But for regular everyday food... No. First come first served!

My family members do not touch things like sweets or ice cream if they see it in the fridge because they know that someone has kept it for himself.
But if there are 2-4 pieces of ice cream or pastry, then understand that one part of it belongs to him and the rest to others but still we announce once before eating.

My family yeah, they would ask for permission if see something not belong to them. I mean like cakes, ice cream or snacks. If just main foods, like chicken, meat. etc

It's just me and my wife in our house.

In addition to the normal gamut of food we buy for both of us...

My wife often buys food just for herself, and I (almost) always ask before touching it. I often buy food for me, but if she eats it (she rarely asks first), it doesn't bother me.

No, we buy more than enough of everything, and if we run out of something, we just get more. There are also taste differences that result in only one person in the house eating something for a large chunk of whats in there.

I think you interpreted the question different than what I wanted/hoped. I think you are imagining a situation where someone may ask, "Hey X, can I open the refrigerator and eat?". That is not the scenario I had in mind. I am thinking of a situation where you are allowed to use the fridge (thats why in option 2, I said "shared fridge")
