someone I know in real life but have no connection to on facebook showed up in my suggested friends. Does that mean they've looked at my profile?

No, not necessarily. I don't know their exact algorithm (I doubt anyone does) but that could just mean that the algorithm worked out that you might know them through other connections you already have.
