What’s the hardest but best life lesson your parents taught you?

It came from my mom. We had an argument when I was 21. I told her that I resented my dad and said I hated how much he worked. She showed me the true meaning of marriage is that night by telling me if I ever said anything bad about him to her again, she will disown me. She chose him but she never chose me. She will stand by and defend the man she chose even if it means she has to disown her son.

Ah? The lesson here is different for me. To me, she showed you, precisely, the worst thing to say to a son. As she chose to silence you to protect... An image, the image she has of her husband. Which I view as egotism on her part, because I don't think your father needed any protection from an assault that does not exist in the first place.

Speaking about lessons taught by mothers then. Mine taught me, indirectly, that being self-absorbed is the worst way to interact with the world. She delivered the lesson against her own will though lol. An old legend holds that she did not realize yet the value of this lesson.
