What do you think when you know you're likely seeing someone for the last time?

A family friend got married earlier this summer. Her grandfather traveled a great distance for it. He is 94 years old and his wife of nearly 65 years died in 2023.

I can't say that I "know" him per se, but he nonetheless has been a recurring figure in my life since I was little. I talked to him for about ten minutes at the reception before I left. In all likelihood, this was the last time he and I would see or speak with each other. In some ways, it bothered me that I wasn't able to speak with him privately or quietly. But on the flipside, we got to look around and see his legacy right there in that room while we were talking.

We talked, we prayed together, we said farewell, and then I went home. And even though his wife is gone, he is a happy and satisfied man.

Have you ever met with someone knowing it would likely be the last time you'd see each other? What was in your heart and mind?

Yes. Whenever I moved and had to say goodbye to everyone.
Then when I left a place of employment, same thing. I worked on a daily basis with the exact same people for years but there came a day when they took another job, or I did - knowing I would would never see them again.
I guess it's just part of life.

It hurts, but all good things come to an end eventually.

That is the way life always is. You just never know. But when you know it is it, then I feel kinda sad and empty, provided that I had a good relationship with them.

Sometimes I am glad if I did not like them. I think it is more upsetting to see somebody for the last time when you think tht you will see them again.
